No way, neck issues are no joke and especially an issue at his position....good guy but not worth keeping

You can draft a lb and still pick up the option and have him another year

how much is the 5th year option?
The 5th year option you almost need to be a full time accountant to figure it out haha....I believe for most its the average of the 3rd to 20th players salary at your position. That said it gets weighed differently based on what percentage of your teams snaps you played, pro bowls made, etc. Its a pretty in depth calculation.

I don't think we have a choice. I mean, unless we are spending our first round pick on a lb who can start day one, and even then, we really need at least two starting lbs. Even if we draft them both this year, they are likely not ready to be starters, both, until 2022 IMO.

I'm not even sure he plays another down in the NFL.
At some point he has to decide with doctors if his playing is even viable.
I'd certainly have no issues letting him become an URFA and if he has a great year resign or give me my comp pick to salvage something.

quick guesstimate is about 6.5M but that's of course removing all the pass rush LB types. way too much for a guy to play 5 games a year a full go and 2-3 more at 75%.

Keep in mind, generally speaking, LBer position has more injuries than all others ( Stephen's words ). There are a few exceptions ( Jaylon Smith durability is one ) but excessive injuries at this position are nothing new, meaning we could have the same issues even with new LBers. It's probably one of the reasons teams ( Cowboys ) are reluctant to use 1st round picks on one.

You don't think he's worth $7M for 1 year.......as a starter?

The 5th year option on Vander will likely be around 10 million based on average salaries of other LBs. Does that change anyone's opinion?

I don't think I could justify it right now. Not that I don't want him on the team, but the Cowboys would be better off working on a more modest extension.

That is an excellent point. Would LVE grab 8-12MM per year on the open market? You may get him a lot cheaper right now under a longer contract. With the injury issues a higher one year prove it type deal still may be the way to go. Im not sure without knowing what his numbers would really look like.

If the $10M/year number I see a few posts ago is anywhere near accurate, no way. He is already showing clear signs of a player breaking down physically. MLB is not exactly a position where you can make certain business decisions with regard to contact.

Long term deal? Hell no!. He will continue to struggle staying on the field.

Good guy and a good player (when healthy). Need to replace him.
