We have literally needed a safety since 2007

The past 2 years would have been good. Done decent guys at safety the past 2 years. Look at Jeremy Chinn from last year, a ton of guys wanted him here. Granted out of Lamb and Diggs we would lose one of them to get Chinn.

I would have given up Hill for Adderley or Thornhill possibly Rapp
This year imo is no worse than 2019 but we'll see. Last year wasnt so great either. I dont think there was a first round safety either year and this year is no different

So you don't think Chinn, McKinney, Delpit, Winfield are good?

That class was much better then this year and it's not even close. Winfield and Chinn would 100 percent go in the first round if they did a redraft

I don't think people realized how good Chinn and Winfield really were.

Chinn was amazing this year; closest thing I've seen to Kam Chancellor.

Winfield was downgraded for his size. That kid is a football player.

This year..

Guys I like:

Trevon Moehrig, TCU - Great athlete, makes plays, true centerfielder. Reminds me of Jesse Bates (Wake Forest/Cincinnati Bengals). also like Bates, not the greatest tackler.
Bubba Bolden, S, Miami - Known him since he was a sophomore in high school. 1st round physical ability, play consistency is not where you'd like it be.
Talano Hufanga, USC - Kept him out of rankings due to my USC homerness slash bias. He just makes plays, over and over again. I was worried about his 40 time and overall athletic ability, but he finds the ball. Was Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year this season.
Hamsah Nasirildeen, Florida State - Poor man's Isaiah Simmons. Great size and movement skills. Can help with the dangerous Tight Ends in the league.
Tyree Gillespie, Missouri - Thumper, reminds me of the 49ers Jaquiski Tartt.
Divine Deablo, Virginia Tech - Speaking of Kam Chancellor earlier, this fellow Virginia Tech alum is big boy and does his work closer to the LOS.

Guys I do not like:
Andre Cisco, Syracuse - I want to like him, I really do. He can be special when the ball is in the air. He can also be outright stupid. Scares me if he's your last line of defense.
Richard LeCounte, Georgia - Georgia is always talented on defense. You have 7 or 8 future NFL players around you. I wanted to see more plays. I wanted to see elite movement skills.
Paris Ford, Pitt - Like Cisco, I just think he makes really poor decisions at times. Capable of big plays. I'm allowing the possibility that I'm wrong on Ford (and Cisco).
Caden Sterns, Texas - Does not make plays. Looks the part, seems to shy away from physicality.

Guys I cannot figure out:
Jevon Holland, Oregon - Nickel guy, not sure about his speed. Versatility is his biggest asset.
Richie Grant, UCF - Seems like he's been there forever. UCF has some talented CB's (in 2019) so I wonder how much of his success was due to them.
James Wiggins, Cincinnati - Crazy athlete but seems like he's always hurt. Also older than most prospects.
Ar'Darius Washington, TCU - He's like a mix of Lamarcus Joyner and Bob Sanders to me. He's tiny, but I'm sure someone is going to draft him in the middle rounds, put him at Nickel, and watch him make plays.

Nah I'm saying they are on the tier of this years safeties imo. I think higher of Moehrig, Lecounte and Grant than most though.

I need to watch more film on the safeties this year but I agree with Cisco and a few others you talked about. I also disagree with a couple but I'm not a professional scout and have been wrong many times

When was a good year?

I was praying that Derwin James would drop in 2018 - close, but got snatched two picks ahead of us.

KingintheNorth's post was dead-on - Moehrig is the only guy who may even sniff consideration in the first round IMO. There's maybe only 4-5 guys who should be drafted in Rounds 1-3.

Maybe you find a diamond in the rough on the third day, but you're spinning the roulette wheel like everyone else.

When Derwin was still available 2 picks in front of Dallas I wanted them to trade up to get him. Wouldn't have costed much going up 2 spots. That being said, would he still be injury prone had Dallas drafted him

The Cowboys were too enamored with LVE. They really, really liked him and thought they were being clever.

LVE is talented so I'm not being critical of the pick.

I hate that they allegedly ignored medical red flags.

And like you guys, I was amazed Derwin (17th) and Tremiane Edmunds (16th) were within reach (LVE went 19th).

Derwin falling was like Lamb falling..... crazy

I’ve seen enough of Wilson to feel good about him being our SS.

Outside of Moehrig I don’t think there’s a first round talent, but there’s decent depth in mid rounds. We just need to upgrade Woods...which shouldn’t be too hard.

Don’t forget Washington landed their future starting safety who was rated to PFF all rookie team in the 7th! Kamren Curl

Good post. There were several SS available, this is just drafting negligence by the Cowboys.

Really like this post too. I like the Jessie Bates comp, wanted Bates but you know how that goes.

2 years ago when Rapp and those guys came out was a good year.
Not really. There was a lot of hype, but they haven't done anything. There's a bunch of guys who are alright, but you could make a case that Wilson was the best pick of that entire class.

Jury is still out, but that year is a pretty good case study in why "invest resources at safety" isn't really a smart, fundamental approach.
