Are we going back to the complete 3-4 scheme? Remember Dware played most of his HOF career in it. Could Randy Gregory have similar results?

If the Cowboys look in-house for a replacement, George Edwards spent the year as a senior defensive assistant. He was Zimmer's defensive coordinator from 2014 to 2019.

But the first question that must be answered is what type of scheme the Cowboys want to use. In Green Bay, McCarthy employed a 3-4 scheme for most of his tenure. If he wants to continue with the hybrid look Nolan attempted to use, adding players to fit the scheme will be an offseason priority. In all but three years of his time in Green Bay, the Packers used a 3-4 scheme.

Unfortunately Dallas does not currently have the players to run a successful 4-3 or 3-4 defense. The dline is weak and LB corp questionable. To get the defense to a respectable level will take a multiple season complete rebuild while keeping in mind the unanswered question of signing Dak or not and an aging and injury riddled oline.

No way we go to a 3-4. Whole reason Nolan was fired, at least according to Jerry, is that we switched a new defense without the right players and the right preparation. Neither of those factors are likely to significantly change this year.

I'd expect Edwards

I think the opposite. I think we look for primarily a 4-3 guy. The one strength of our defense is our DEs. Jerry loves Gregory and DLaw is our best all-around player. I bet Gregory gets an extension in the off-season. I think the plan will be to let those two put their hand in the dirt and attack. He is also probably wondering why our two young stud LBs are all of sudden trash.
Plus, Jerry wants to win NOW. We have the triplets at WR, but we cant afford to keep all three for very long. We have a talented but aging OL, Zeke is fading. Jerry is getting old. He wants to win now. In his mind, why should we rebuild the defense into a 3-4 that might not work for a couple of years, when we have pieces for a 4-3. One decent offseason retoooling for a 4-3 and our D can be good enough to compliment our offense that has a chance to be historically good.

They just wasted a year with Nolan.

Totally agree. I can see Edwards, Jerry also likes veteran coaches, with skins on the wall, so Quinn or Lewis also would not surprise me.

No, Not wasted. Whit limited off season ,Pre season and new coaching staff. What else did you expect? Now they know who worked and who didn't. No more excuses in 2021. they have had their pardon. The old coach in me is excited.

Where are the pieces for a 4-3? Where are the linebackers? What we have is 2 good players in Gregory and D Law. Now is the time to build a multiple front for future seasons via the draft. Not put all our eggs in one basket. We need to be replacing players (Smith, LVE) not re-loading

We're staying 4-3 base. Maybe incorporate hybrid but there is no way jerry wants to take dlaw out of what he does best. We have rushers for the 4-3 what we lack is run stopping DT's. That should be the focus. They should also stop trying to be cute and only look at guys who can rush from inside. Focus on guys who can stop the run at a high level and let our DE's who are really good rushers do their job.

What do you do the 40% of the time when D Law is on the Sidelines? Why not incorporate a different look?

From what I saw to start the season they had dlaw and griffen standing up. A few games in and they backed off but they were clearly asking guys to do things they aren't built for. I don't care what style we use, but we must put guys in position they can actually execute at a high level.

LB are questionable? They're a joke! Ones over the hill, the other a gimp, and other suffers from fragility.

Hybrid looks is the future of the NFL. you just need to coordinate or they can pull it off and nolan has never indicated that he can.

We don't have outside linebackers that can cover and we don't have backline backers worth a flip and we don't have a defensive tackle to man The middle.

Throw in issues in secondary personnel and switching completely over to a 3-4 makes very little sense to me.

Nolan and Tomsula were also shitcanned (and I knew they would be) when the whole Jerry wants RG to get more snaps after his great game came out. RG should’ve seen 60-70% of the snaps at RDE ALL SEASON LONG and didn’t. we all knew RG should’ve been on the field but the jackass cos he’s didn’t. THAT’S when I knew those guys were toast.
