This was an exciting matchup with a ton of prospects to watch. This list isn’t exhaustive but here’s my takeaway on some of the players I keyed in on:

Patrick Surtain II
If anyone declares he shutdown Chris Olave they are talking out their rear. Surtain wasn’t covering Olave exclusively. That said, he had a solid game and didn’t give up any big plays. He missed a potential INT in the end zone on a ball that was deflected. He did also get wrecked on a shallow out in the end zone but Fields sailed the ball and flat-out missed the gimme TD. All-in-all I thought he played pretty well and didn’t change my mind on him as a prospect one way or the other. The Combine will be crucial.

Christian Barrimore
Big-bodied DT with a strong motor and pass rush ability. He won the Defensive Player of the Game with 7 tackles, 1 sack, and 2 TFL. This prospect worries me more than some others because he’s tough to evaluate based on relatively limited sample size especially if you’re considering him at #10.

Justin Fields
Fields struggled once again. I actually think he got away with some bad throws against Clemson despite the results. This wasn’t the way he needed to finish out his career. He missed on a number of throws that didn’t have a high level of difficulty. He still goes in the 1st round but I’m not sure if he’s the consensus QB2 still.

Shawn Wade

I do not see Wade as a starter early in his career. He looks best suited for the slot. He was absolutely wrecked on a few passes in the first half. To his credit he was an active tackler and came back and competed to register a couple of PBUs. I don’t think he has the) speed to be viable on the outside. Looked like a 3rd round prospect to me.

my take away is we need to find a way to land Surtain and Barmore and stay away from Ohio state players mostly. Those 2 cats are instant plug and play guys.

OSU would never try to attack Surtain, Olave did not do crap in that game be it vs Surtain or others. You may not call Surtain a shutdown CB but OSU was not stupid they stayed away from him through out the game

but NO ONE is Revis. That said, I want Surtain. The guy makes us better day 1. We would have 2 cornerstone cb's. Makes our safeties and dline better too.

Couple takes. Barmore is a guy right now Im willing to trade up for from the 2nd to late first. I like him alot, but Im just not there at 10 right now.

Wade has seemed to fall out of the first most places. Could wind up good value for someone day 2. Slot is a tough spot to cover. He isnt really on my wish list there, but someone could get a good player at that spot

I don't waste my time trying to compare college kids who have yet to play a single down in the NFL to all pro players who are in the NFL. What I do look at is Surtain skill sets, the size, strength, arm length and quickness as well as technique for the CB position.

OSU did go after Surtain in the red zone. He was torched (Garrett Wilson?) on that shallow out but Fields flat-out sailed the throw.

Barmore is a 3T position guy. Now would he be better than what we have at the 3T spot? Unknown, as are nearly all rookies. What I do like about him is that he's "done good" at both run and pass defense. THAT'S what this team needs, not a "just stuff the middle" or a "just rush the passer" guy, anybody we get has to be at least pretty good at both of those, and they are very hard to find.

Right, every corner has been torched at one time or another. Michael Irvin torched Deion a couple of times, but that doesn't mean Deion wasn't a great corner...

Looked good out there, but the speed concerns me and like you said the combine is going to be crucial.
With Diggs not being a true speed guy, I worry about matchups if we play a team with a burner. With Dan Quinn, I wonder if he emphasizes more athletic safeties and plays more zone to eliminate the need for a fast CB.

Looked amazing, but you're 100% right on hard to evaluate based on limited sample size, and lots of inconsistency.
Late 1st early 2nd is where I'd feel comfortable in drafting him.

Had a chance to fight for the #1 spot if he had an amazing game, but he didn't the question is will he be the 3rd Qb off the board with how he played in the national championship.

He got toasted all game, and is going to be a late day 2 or early day 3 pick. Slot CB or maybe a S is going to be where he plays on Sundays.

He gave up a couple of passes, nothing major.

Listen, I like Surtain and would be onboard with taking him at #10, but you’re talking out your arse (“OSU would never go after him...”).

He gave up a couple of short gains when Bama was up by over 21 points and all CB were laying off to prevent big plays down field, they were willing to give up short passes. Other than that OSU did not go after him

I personally like Gallimore at 1T spots. He has alot of power and linear burst. I think he will be a better pass rusher from that spot than at a 3T. You aren't playing him there on run downs, but on pass he can cause alot of havoc

I think a weak top class is going to have Nixon and Barmore going in the first IMO. Being strong pass rushers, both would have always been 1st round candidates. But not having elite talent at the position makes it more likely IMO

BS.

They did throw at him in the first half while the game was competitive.

I get it, you like Surtain. I do too.

That said, you don’t have to try and make it sound like he completely shutdown one side of the field and was untested at all.

I think he and Diggs could make nice bookends especially if Quinn plans on running a Cover 3 scheme.
