This was an exciting matchup with a ton of prospects to watch. This list isn’t exhaustive but here’s my takeaway on some of the players I keyed in on:
Patrick Surtain II
If anyone declares he shutdown Chris Olave they are talking out their rear. Surtain wasn’t covering Olave exclusively. That said, he had a solid game and didn’t give up any big plays. He missed a potential INT in the end zone on a ball that was deflected. He did also get wrecked on a shallow out in the end zone but Fields sailed the ball and flat-out missed the gimme TD. All-in-all I thought he played pretty well and didn’t change my mind on him as a prospect one way or the other. The Combine will be crucial.
Christian Barrimore
Big-bodied DT with a strong motor and pass rush ability. He won the Defensive Player of the Game with 7 tackles, 1 sack, and 2 TFL. This prospect worries me more than some others because he’s tough to evaluate based on relatively limited sample size especially if you’re considering him at #10.
Justin Fields
Fields struggled once again. I actually think he got away with some bad throws against Clemson despite the results. This wasn’t the way he needed to finish out his career. He missed on a number of throws that didn’t have a high level of difficulty. He still goes in the 1st round but I’m not sure if he’s the consensus QB2 still.
Shawn Wade
I do not see Wade as a starter early in his career. He looks best suited for the slot. He was absolutely wrecked on a few passes in the first half. To his credit he was an active tackler and came back and competed to register a couple of PBUs. I don’t think he has the) speed to be viable on the outside. Looked like a 3rd round prospect to me.
