The cap and Dak's contract will obviously affect what we will ultimately do in free agency, but now that we have Quinn confirmed as the DC, these are the free agents we could target to help get his defense off the ground.

I like what we have at DE & I really do not see any great options out there for LB, so I focused on 1T, 3T, & FS where I think we need the most help:

DL
Shelby Harris
Dalvin Tomlinson
Poona Ford
DaQuan Jones
Roy Robertson-Harris

FS
Marcus Maye
Justin Simmons
Marcus Williams
I don't want to sign any defensive FAs this year. given that 7 of the defensive position starters are questionable at best, its time to focus on drafting defense, see where we are next year and then perhaps filling in a gap with a FA or two.....specially given the lower cap expected for 2021. I am vehemently opposed to signing any pricy FA this year.

i'm not even sure how our DE group will turn out from what it was in '20.
Will Aldon Smith return or go FA ?
Can Gregory be trusted to start full time DE ?
Will the new DL coach give Bradley Anae a much better chance at playing than previous DL coach ?

I don't think we'll acquire any stud FAs (ala von miller, KJ Wright) in the LB unit either.
but what kind of bargain vet help depth will we acquire in FA instead of the usual Joe Thomas, Justin March ?
As usual i'm not expecting very much .

Well therin lies the issue.

If no cap space to pay a safety its either the draft or a Clinton-Dix dumpster dive.

And we know all too well how that goes

It isn't cap space. It's philosophy. The Joneses are not paying top-tier money to outside FAs.

I was hoping that we'd see a change in that philosophy with the hiring of a new coaching staff, but we didn't in McCarthy's first year. If they don't change it some and add some players to that defense, then it's not going to matter who's DC.

Keanu Neal

Maye was rumored to be priority #1 for the Jets. Could change with a new coach.

But I believe Maye and Simmons are out of our price range
Neal is a SS I believe, I like how Wilson is coming along there. I'd try hard for the Others, as they play FS

- yeh i'd definitely be surprised to go after ex- Cowboys who were not thought about to re-sign here and allowed to move on in FA, ..

- More so we just drafted and invested two 3 techs DTs in early rounds in Malik's place; so why would we want to bring Malik back to contest playing time away from Hill and Gallimore ?

- Add to that is Maliek is not strong run defender and we are really needing that kind of 1 tech plugger type FA vet.
I'm simply telling you what I think will happen.

Tomlinson, strengthen Dallas while weakening the Giants.
Would be a solid acquisition, but his price tag will be high.
Both of the Giants interior DL will be in high demand.

Thats probably accurate.

I'd love to see a list of the last second contract given by NFL teams that wasn't one of their own.

I promise that Brendan Carr in 2012 is near the bottom of that list.

Given the owners need to be liked by players and insistence on forming relationships, plus the absolute disaster of recent results of signing their own.....I have an extremely tough time thinking theres no correlation.

Smith is fool's gold...he was good for a few games at the start of the year but by season's end was about the same as Tyrone Crawford.

Actually I think Joe Thomas has been a good player for what he cost.

The whole cap space thing is crazy. We will have room to sign Dak, our own free agents that we want and a couple of outsiders assuming they aren't in the top 10 at their position.

We have somewhere between 18 and 22 million free now. I expect somewhere around 3-4 m to be saved with cuts to guys like Chris Jones and a couple others. And there is the potential for like 50m to be freed with our top 5-6 contracts if we wanted to. I expect we will move around 2-3 deals and that will net us at least another 25m in cap. That would be on Martin and Lawrence's deals, maybe one of the others. So I think going into free agency we will have somewhere around 45-50m to use for Dak, any team free agents we resign and any outsiders. We should have no problems making changes and adding some pieces if we want.

I dont think we necessarily need top tier guys. We don't have unlimited cap space...as it is we are likely going to have to redo Martin and Lawrence's deals, and with that and a couple cuts like Jones we will have room to sign Dak, our own free agents we want to keep, our rookie pool and then a few outsiders.

At DT, we don't need 15m guys. But we need guys that fit and can play better than the trash we have at the spot. In reality we have 7 spots on D that need an upgrade. On O the only real one is a backup OT. I think we have I think in our first 4 picks we probably should have 3 defensive picks and maybe 1 one on OL. The rest is D IMO. Maybe another backup QB project...DiNucci aint gonna cut it. Moving forward, probably assume that Lawrence, Gregory, Diggs, Smith, LVE and Wilson are likely starters with Brown the nickle corner. If Hill comes back he could be one possible DT. But we need at least a starting level DT, a starting level LB, a starting level corner and and starting level safety just to get a decent group on D. That should be possible. Would we like to upgrade a couple more spots? Yes, but unlikely with the cap and the number of picks we have.

How do you think Romo would have looked if they threw him out as a rookie? DiNucci should have never been put out there.

I don't agree. We've been trying to get by without top-tier players at some key positions and it has gotten us nowhere. I believe we need to use free agency to add a couple of top-tier players to the defense, preferably at DT and S.

Our cap and the ability to create more is in good enough shape to go after the top 1 or 2 at those positions, depending on who actually reaches FA. Then, IMO we use the first couple of rounds of the draft to add another DT and a CB (although I could live with us getting Sherman for a relatively cheap amount and biding time at CB.)

If we try to fix all of our issues in the draft, then as with any draft, we're going to probably end up with 1 or 2 truly starter-quality players and a couple of rotational-quality guys. And if we try to fix some of our issues with bargain FAs, then we're going to end up with the same thing we've had on defense the last few years.

We need to shop smart, but not be afraid to spend if there's a player worth it at a position of need.

Right. Fans are so quick to wash their hands of players, not even willing to consider the possibility that they could develop. Romo himself has said that he had a lot to work on his rookie year and would not have looked good. David Lee had to work long and hard with Romo to get him to where he was eventually ready to be more than just potential.

"I would not be where I am today if it weren't for Coach Lee," said current Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Tony Romo, who Lee tutored Romo's first four years (2003-2006) in the National Football League. "I was so raw when I first came to Dallas. My knowledge of the game, my throwing motion, everything was just not good enough for the NFL, to be honest."
