Is it weird that I’m jealous that the lions hired a new GM and are starting with a clean slate

I don't get it. What is Jerry currently doing that is so terrible as the GM? I'm just talking his GM role, nothing else.

Not firing himself. If your GM hadn’t won a thing in 25 yrs...was only one of a handful of scrub teams not to get to a NFC Championship Game in 25 yrs. You hire a coach that has no experience and is more like a family friend and keep them 10 yrs despite only 2 playoff games wins. You create atmosphere where guys don’t care. It’s a country club. That is our GM. In any other franchise he is gone.

His 2009 special teams draft alone would have got him canned on any other team

I'm talking about his GM duties, and recently. Within the last 5-10 years. As an owner and those responsibilities, that's different. But just focusing on the GM aspect, I don't see anything that bad. More good than bad IMO. Is some random hire GM going to miraculously draft better? Pick better FAs? You want to criticize Jerry for caving into Zeke, go ahead, but that's an owner issue. BTW, had Jerry not paid Zeke 2020 would have been Zeke's last year of his rookie deal.

The record extension of Zeke
The bloated contract for Jaylon
The lack of any serious direction in free agency
The pathetic drafting that willfully ignores key needs on a football team. For example, safety has been an area of need on this team for almost a decade and this GM has done what? He gladly squanders draft capital on receivers but cannot be bothered to shore up a defensive secondary?

if you think Jerry has been a good GM because he took Lamb or whatever other lucky pick he had you need to have your head examined.

Pick better FAs?

In recent years this team has been a non player in free agency so what better free agent did we pick? Every one is busy screaming about Nolan and his schemes and yet the defensive line getting the ball run up the middle has been an issue since 2018. Exactly what was done to address any of that. Isn’t that what a GM is supposed to do or were those positions just magically going to be filled with over the hill free agents on their last legs or guys who were undrafted?

Like I said, 2020 would have been Zeke's last year of his rookie contract had Jerry not caved in and extended him. How much is it really hurting the Cowboys to keep him another year? One year's cap hit? Big deal.

As far as FA, the one year I was pissed was 2017 when he did nothing. I thought it was negligent. I went off on a rant and was warned for cursing. But other than that, what else? Every GM makes mistakes. What good did getting McCoy and Poe do this past season? A complete waste. You can't always tell who will pan out. Robert Quinn was a great acquisition. The Bears picked him up, paid him based on his year with the Cowboys and he was a non factor. A lot of this stuff is unpredictable. I know years ago Jerry would make horrible decisions. I just don't see it in recent years.

Im confused on your responses. My reply above mentions all GM duties. As a GM your responsibility is to construct a team...players and coaches..that can win a SB. In the last 25 yrs we are one of like 3-4 teams that have never reached a conference championship game. He has failed at finding coaches that have taken us anywhere. Garrett was here 10 yrs and had 2 playoff wins. Add in those years he had Dave Campo and Chan Gailey. He’s had what people would consider 2 franchise QBs and talent and didn’t create a “team” to take advantage of that. He’s willfully ignored D in free agency and over the years he didn’t use free agency. Honestly all of this is in a GM. You brought up the last 10 yrs. He allowed a bad coach to waste 10 yrs. ANY other GM would have been fired with what he’s “accomplished” the last 25 yrs. We are the Detroit Lions.

Maybe I just don't know what a GM does. I thought the owner hired the GM and the coach.

Gm is a big job. Its 365 days a year. You have to know college and pro rosters like the back of your hand. You need relationships in other NFL front offices to swing deals. Jerry does not have the time nor talent for being an NFL GM. He tries to delegate everything and still call himself the GM. But in reality, Dallas hasn't had a real GM since Tex Schramm.

Owner does hire a GM. The coach is usually part of the GM duties with sign off from owner. The GM ,in most structures, is in charge of all football operations including hiring/firing coaches, signing FAs, running the draft with their staff etc. Some GMs do the above but the coach is also part of bringing on players etc. Honestly I don’t think Jerry would even make it to the Garrett years as GM if he was a true GM. The way he traded draft picks for players who didn’t pan out long term...Galloway and Roy Williams Jr

Contracts are a GM issue. Where and how you spend your money goes hand in hand in the success or lack of it in this case. And in this case you can't separate the 2. He's the owner and the GM and that is 1 job that results in the same crap every year!
