During the regular season, I started a discussion about how we should rebuild our defense similar to Tampa Bay as they had the #1 run defense and a great front 7 to work with. Several people said they didn't have a good enough secondary to be an elite defense. What I just witnessed was a dominate front that held Brees, Rodgers and Mahomes all in check. Brady was solid in their run, but it was the defense that gave them this year's chip.
Living here in NY, I witnessed a similar defense with the Giants. That loss to them when we were the #1 seed still sickens me. Kind of like the Saints, we handled them well in the regular season beating them twice, but they beat us in the third matchup. The Giants like the Bucs beat Cowboys, Packers and the undefeated Patriots, which were the top 3 offenses that season, where Patriots were one of the best in that era. Can anyone name the starting secondary for the Giants that started in that Super Bowl? We certainly remember Strahan, Osi, Tuck.
Building a defense in this pass happy era is all about generating a consistent pass rush with your front 4, playing extra men in coverage. A defense also has to be able to stop the run without the need of bringing extra men inside the box. Win the trench battle, win the game!
On offense, having a good, cohesive OL is paramount. Also, having a running back to exploit less defenders inside the box, is a huge advantage. I know there are many haters of Zeke on this board and he had a terrible season, but he is still needed. He may not be a homerun back any longer, but he is still an excellent power back that can take advantage of this type of coverage fronts teams play.
