After watching tonights game I noticed a few things we need to do to get where we want to go.

Scrap the LB's we currently have is #1. Go get undersized very athletic LB'S who can run and cover.
  • White is a guy who can bring the rush from the middle but can also play sideline to sideline because of his athleticism. Not the greatest in coverage, but it didn't look bad tonight and in the future it will improve.
  • Lavonte David: This is a guy who most people said was the most talented/ productive LB in the draft and fell late in the second because of his size. The dude has been a very good LB for a long time.
Guys in the draft to fit these holes.
1st RD
If we trade back in the first I would have interest in Parsons if we know the off the field stuff is behind him would fill the Devin While role.
JOK is another guy if we trade back I'd have interest in being a guy who could fill the Levonte David role
Day 2
Jabril Cox, Baron Browning are athletic LB who can fill the Levonte David Role.
Talanoa Hufanga is the wild card guy is a S/ LB hybrid. Probably the most instinctive player in this draft who would be your base S and can play some LB.
Go find our Vita Vea
The Cowboys need to find a big ugly that can stop the run, and push the pocket back in pass rush. Someone like Dalvin Tomlinson.

I don't see a 1st round guy to fill those role.
Day 2
Tyler Shelvin would give us the beef up front to hold down the middle of the line and allow our LB's to run freely.
Jay Tufele can hold up against the run and get you a pass rush. Might be more 3-tech than 1 tech but would be good in the run game from the 3-tech spot.
Day 3
Marlon Tuipolotu I think could be a stout 1 tech who also brings a little bit in the pass rush game.

Long CB's with close to elite athleticism
Honestly I don't think you need super high level CB play if you fix the first 2 thing above, because the athletic LB's help prevent the stuff underneath, and it allows your CB's to focus on one thing which is not allowing the WR to get over the top of them.
1st RD
Caleb Farley: Long athletic CB who is an elite athlete.
2nd Day
Tyson Campbell is another long elite athlete who would fit the role.
Ifeatu Melifonwu fits the bill.

Safeties...?
We didn't see two of the greatest athletes at safety in this game, but they both know their role as covering things in the middle and do not get beat deep. Both of these guys are sure tacklers which helps clean up things due to having undersized LB's.

Richie Grant is the guy who would be solid in the run, not a great athlete but reads and reacts well and can play multiple spots for a S.

Talanoa Hufanga I put him above for LB, but he is currently playing S/LB and would be a great SS/ LB option for this team.

I think we can fill many of these holes on the defense in 1 year, and all of them in 2 years if we draft smartly.

A trade down adding 1-2 day 2 picks or a day 2 and early day 3 would give us some added darts to go get some guys to fix this defense.

Agree largely with your thoughts

A very important element is to understand that we cannot fill everything via the draft and will actually have to her a couple of tier 1 FAs on defense

my picks would be

Tomlinson at DT
Timmons or Maye or Williams at FS

Jerry chases the Champs every year like Rerun running after the truck.

The song playing at the time in the background is similar, and fitting.

Strangely, Dwaynes method of picking football winners was by best helmet.

Wonder if our draft board is put together that way.

Free agent rankings as well maybe?

Seems as though if you played your college ball on a blue home field you get special attention within the Dallas Cowboys.

Coincidence? I'm not sold.

Vita Vea is what Parcells called a Planet player. Only so many players that size that move like him on the planet. Cowboys FO apparently had alot of interest in 2018 because he was a 1T with 3T traits. Your best bet in this draft is probably trying to develop McNeil

I think trying to mimic another team after the SB is a bit of a waste, each year we get a different SB champ by and large and the keys to their teams are somewhat different. I think teams have to be fundamentally sound on both sides of the ball, you have to avoid making the critical mistakes, as Jimmy Johnson once said it is not always about how many big plays you make but the team who makes the fewest mistakes. Last nights game TB won the battles on offense, defense and special teams, KC punter gave up some great field position off a couple of lousy punts. For Dallas I do think we have the offense who can compete barring the injuries we sustain on OL. Defense we have some good players but need to add more to it and then it falls to the HC and his staff of getting these guys to play as 1 team not 22 individuals. Guys need to know and understand their assignments and execute it, not chasing the play like a dog chasing a car. We need guys who can put in the time to not only know their job but understand the entire scheme in which they work in and also understand situational football and an example 3rd and 2 and you give the WR a 10 yard cushion. I learned a long time ago that stupid gets you beat quicker than anything else.

We need to pick players that can be successful in Quinn’s scheme. I know we all have players that we think should be drafted in certain spots. I’d like to see his footprint reflected in the selections. I think our front 7 needs real work. I’d love to see that addressed in this draft.

I’ve been saying for a few days now that the LB’s need to be faster and have much better change of direction. These guys that are 6-5 just don’t have the movement skills that you need on defense. They can’t change directions quickly enough.

I think JOK is the prototype of what the Will should be in the NFL. I really love that guy’s game. He moves like a corner but is big enough to be a LB in Quinn’s defense.

It won’t matter though because Dallas is set on length at the LB position, and you’ll never have true quickness at 6-5.

I’m not as high on JOK as most. Parsons in the only LB I would take at 10. Obviously that’s if we are comfortable with the character questions. Us

I'm all about athleticism at the LBr position but it needs to be someone who actually played LBr in college. JOK is a project that doesn't have a solidified position at the next level.

Parsons fits the bill, and maybe Collins, but after them you've got some question marks. Cox is a stud in coverage but he lacks instincts / awareness in the run game.

Our run D was our biggest weakness last year...so we shouldn't ignore that when evaluating LBs.

I really hope Dallas isn’t stupid enough to ignore OL. After watching what transpired this year, we can’t afford to be unprepared. The OL makes every other Offensive position player simply..better(or worse depending on how you look at it).

Of course we could just say..

Tyron Smith will stay healthy all year
La’el Collins’s injured hip if fine, no worries
Zach Martin is good too, it’s not going to be a trend
Biadasz injury was a fluke, like his college injuries
CWill is getting better every year.
McGovern will get better with experience
Knight is our future LT
Steele was really showing improvement..he’ll start

Now if any of the above seems far fetched, well.. Because it is

I think a veteran LB is in order for the Cowboys.

1. Fix the DLine. And Oline.
2. Fill in the rest!!!

LB-Cox (one of the better coverage linebackers in the entire draft, might be there in rd 3)
NT-McNeil/Shelvin/Wilson-all could be late day 2 selections
CB-Farley-checks all the boxes
FS-Moehrig, Grant-both fill that single high safety position

1-Farley
2-Moehrig/Grant
3a-Cox
3b-McNeil/Shelvin/Wilson

It's very doable.

Exactly, Dallas went with a power running game, fast linebackers and a rotation on the defensive line in the 1990's, at a time when teams were going away from the running game, the Bills' high powered, fast action passing game was supposed to be the way to go, but it didn't get them SBs.

Mimicing other teams means you have no plan of your own, by the time you get the players and coaches to mimic the other team, often then it doesn't work anymore...

I really wouldn't compare Tomlinson to Vea. Tomlinson doesn't have the explosiveness or movement skills to do a lot of what Vea does - they're not really the same class of player.

I mean, no way you're lining Tomlinson up as a 5-tech.

I think every player remaining healthy on the OL is far fetched but I also think losing all the OL players we did is also a bit far fetched and would not think it will continue to be the case. I have no issue of Cowboys drafting an OL player at some point in the draft or even looking to add through FA but seldom does a team have to contended with the amount of injuries along the OL as Dallas did this past season.

You're also not going to get blindsides by your center retiring right after free agency...
