Furboy's First 2021 mock draft - Cowboys First-pick with no trades

Both Moehrig/Grant could go even higher then our 2nd rd pick, might have to trade up for them. I think the need at DT, is more of a run stuffer then another 3T. Tufele can play both, but he is more of a 3, which we already have Hill/Gallimore. The third round we could see some quality DT's that can stop run, these type of players usually fall further down cause they offer little as pass rushers.
 
Things I like a lot:
The overall plan here is very legit to me.
Heavy defense and especially in up the middle types with LB/DT Rounds 1/2.
Alaric Jackson that late is real steal and given the depth of this OT class you could really see that happen.
Depth selections at WR/LB/DB can all play special teams year 1 to give you a chance to hit on them as positional guys later on.

Things I don't love:
Parsons to me is probably overrated by boards. I don;t hate him at 10 but he's not in 'my' top 10.
I think he's more a 15-20 area guy who you gotta take some risks on but has a really high ceiling.
Caden Sterns is a solid S option but I saw some real questionable play of him at UT so I hope we get a better starting FS option.
Mukuawu is not the South Carolina CB covet.

What I'd tweak:
If I could have a CB round 1 I'd go that route. Day 1 starter with Diggs and ABrown.
I'd keep round 2 at DT.
I'd use my early R3 on Safety. Jevon Holland/Richie Grant are guys I like there with Grant rising now that people watched his film.
Late R3 LB options include Baron Browning, Chazz Surtatt. Dylan Moses

Actually, in that case, then perhaps it'd be worth trading down, as I want anyway, and maybe trying to get Moehrig with a late 1st if we trade down far enough? Or, better yet, maybe Christian Barrmore, who I see is jumping up a lot of boards. I'll have to play around with the mocks to see how that'd work. But Barrmore in round 1 and Moehrig or Grant would be a nice 1-2 combo. And yes, the DT we need is to stop the run, and Tufele looks capable. I also like Marvin Wilson from Fla State. He's someone i think we can get rd 3.

Both those guys could def go before 44 but someone has to fall and I wonder how any teams are seeking a Single high safety because that's the very definition of what these guys are.
If you have a Single high already to play more cover 0/2/4 than these guys will have less value.
I am intrigued by Tufele because to me he really is either a 1T that has to gain 10 pounds of muscle or a 3T that needs to lose 10 pounds of fat.
I wouldn't at all mind him at my backup to AWoods at the 1T who offers a bit more pass rush but won't shut down the run.
You really only play a run stop formation about 25% of the time nowadays.

I would be really intrigued by option to trade down in 1st and back up into late 1st to snare both Moehrig and Barmore.
My guess is both rise throughout the process
Barmore is inconsistent but has rare traits and even his lazy plays are solid.
Moehrig is easily the top rated single high guy to me. Bigger, stronger player than Grant but covers tons of ground and can man cover.
Only real issue is double moves and the like when paired into man coverage with quick players.

Moehrig is a hard player to project, I see him as an early day 2 player, but I seen several big boards, projecting him as a top 20 player. That is way too rich for my liking. Barmore is more of a pass rusher then he is as a run defender at this point. Doesn't mean he won't develop that area of his game, but we need to improve our run defense before anything else. The likes of McNeil, Shelvin, Marvin Wilson are the best fits for our need at DT. Team could certainly double up at the position and take another pass rushing DT where the likes of Barmore, Nixon, Owsu, Tufele are the best fits for that type of player.

Thank you for the feedback on this. I'd happily jump on Surtain or Farley in round 1 if available in that spot. Unfortunately, in the mock I did, Farley was taken. I had a chance at Surtain, but I felt that Parsons shaped up a bit better. Plus, I see LB as a bigger need imo. I think the draft is pretty well stocked at CB whereas the LBs aren't great after round 2 from what I can see. So, that was my logic behind going Parsons at 10. If we trade down, which I'm hoping to do on my next simulation for later today, then I will likely take him mid-1st. Sterns was a player I felt in round 3 wasn't bad value, but that's one area that I do want Jerry to address in FA. I don't love any of the prospects aside from Grant and Moehrig, and Tufele, imo, fills a bigger need there. The other option I considered was going Barrmore at 10 and taking Grant round 2 (as I see him as at worst a 2nd round grade), however, that means potentially missing out at LB. In fact, with the way he's rising the boards, I could see myself in a later mock draft as we get closer to the draft taking Grant in round 1 in a trade down. So, based on those aspects, I felt that Sterns was good value for where we were getting him and still allows me to fill 2 other critical needs. Essentially, providing much needed aid to our 3 biggest weaknesses in the first 4 picks. Muku I like, but I get why people are skeptical of him. I had a few other names in mind, but given Quinn being the DC, I felt that Muku would be the CB he'd want given that he's the same height as Sherman and Quinn might see him as someone he can mould into a Sherman-caliber CB. I was honestly surprised in round 4 that Alaric was available at our spot, so I absolutely jumped on that as I think I should. I was trying to angle for an OT with that pick, and seeing him there made that pick a no brainer for me. The WR I went with reminded me so much of Hill that I had to take him there, and he'd be an electrifying KR with that speed.

THat would be a dream scenario, and using the fodder we gained in the trade down to get Moehrig and Barmore would be a great Day 1 of the draft. However, if not, then Wilson in round 3 is not bad.

Certainly teams can view these safeties differently, many see Holland as the best in the class, I worried about his speed. All the top safeties landed in rd 2 last year, where Delpit, Winfield Jr. came off around our pick this year, so it can happen.

I like Tufele as well, think he would be a great fit for the 4T role in the base and add some juice as an interior nickel rusher. He could play many spots for this team. I've heard he needs refinement with his technique and may actually be more of a 3rd rd prospect. He is one of the players on my radar, not sure if he's that 1 Tech we need, but offers help all throughout the DL.

I definitely don't see Moehrig as a top 20 player. That is too rich as you said. However, I could see him as a late 1 which is about where I'd take him on a trade down. The run stopping aspect is part of the reason I like Tufele where I took him. I see him as both a good pass rusher from the DT spot as well as great at stopping the run. I contemplated doubling at DT where I took Patty.
 
Part of the reason I also took Parsons at rd 1 is because the Seahawks made Bobby Wagner, granted, he was round 2, a key focal point of their defence. He made it hard to run on that defence. Parsons is a good run stopper from what I've seen. I think he is overrated in a lot of areas, but I don't think his run stopping ability is overrated. My focus of this draft is trying to fix the run defence while also adding fodder for the pass D. That's where Parsons made sense to me, and I see him kinda similar to Wagner. I suspect Quinn will try to mold our D into what he had in Seattle (as I suspect Richard was trying to do).

It's very interesting draft for the Cowboys, not many top end defensive players, but some good options on day 2 that can really help them. With 10 picks, they can get aggressive and move up for players they target. Would be great to move back in rd 1, get an additional pick, but you need a willing trade partner and have to determine if those 2 lesser players are worth passing up a better prospect.
 
sorry but i dont think Parsons is a top 10 player,heck i wouldnt take a LB in the top 10 just because their shelf life is so short.

I would normally agree. However, we need a run stopping LB, and I don't like many of the prospects after round 2. Though, I will have to look further into some of the other LBers. I do like the Paddy guy I selected in round 5. I am curious to see who else I can take.
