How do fans determine whether it’s the QB or team holding them back?

There’s many fans who appear to be divided on whether it’s our QB or defense holding us back from more success. And it’s a fair argument .

Im curious how fans determine these factors. I mean how do they know for a fact if a team is struggling to go further in the playoffs, etc is because of their QB or other contributing factors.

We know good QB’s can be on bad teams and bad QB’s can be on good teams. I’d be curious of some of the examples out there where bad QB’s are holding back good teams and bad teams are holding back good QB’s.

Not really. When you have one of the worst defenses in the league it's pretty clear who is playing the part of boat anchor.

You think TB12 wins the super bowl a couple of weeks ago with the Cowboys defense? NO.

Also don't forget that the Cowboys were the highest scoring team in the league BEFORE Dak got hurt.

So what explains 2016-2019 when Dallas' defense was giving up between 19-20 points per game average???? 2020 was a debacle of a season defensively and everyone recognizes that but the Dallas defense was not horrible in Dak's first 4 seasons.

Good points.

I’d be curious of examples from other teams where a bad team is holding back a good QB and or a bad QB holding back a good team.

Using this Cowboys team as an example is too close to everyone’s heart . What are some others out there everyone can be more objective. Thanks

Let’s look beyond the Cowboys where we all can be more objective . Any other teams or QB’s??

It's the eye test. We judge off of what we think we are seeing. Performance and execution by players and preparedness, schemes and adjustments by the coaches.

I think Lions and Falcons might be good examples .

Both of their QB’s appear to be better than their teams which are probably holding them back more than the team. Any others?

The eye test is too subjective . Too often we associate winning teams with the best QB’s.

It’s simple really. If you have a defense that’s in the top 10 in the league and you’re not winning then you might want to take a close look at the QB. Of course other things come into play like injures and coaching.

That’s a pretty good measurement. If your offense and or defense is top 10 and you’re not winning then it’s a reasonable assertion that side of the ball isn’t the core problem.

The Bears might be good example of great defenses without a good QB. Any others?

Texans for years had great defenses without a QB.

Commanders this year had a good defense without a good QB.

Giants might be another one in that scenario.

This is holding back the Cowboys. What you're talking about are just symptoms of the disease.
