Jerry 's formula is focused on signing the STARS , especially on the offense . The commercial strategy is to sell tickets and jerseys by having a team built around offensive star players that keep the cowboys in the mainstream media and generate revenue as a result. That part has been very successful revenue wise.
The old saying in many sports is: offense wins fans , defense wins championships .
The dak signing is another continuation of Jerry's strategy. Keeps the star players on board , despite the massive cost and the defensive deficiencies . To be honest , i don't think dak would be too different from Dalton or Gilbert or another FA QB. The offensive system will make many QBs very productive. For those who argue differently , just look at the last 5 years , dak is not a real difference maker and the team cannot win with a bad defense. One or 2 games here and there will not reach the super bowl. If the goal is to reach the playoffs every other year, then yes Dak can do that.
In addition, the coaching hires historically have been on the offense , Chan Gailey , jason Garrett and MM.
Troy and others have said it many times. The focus has to be on fixing the defense and not commercialism. This is why top tier GMs would not authorize such crazy signings of Dak and zeke and others. Did you ever see the Patriots/Steelers/ Green bay make headline market making signings ?? Nope.
The next moves in FA will be crucial to salvage any chance to fix the defense and re-sign important components to field a competitive team.
Washington was what 7-9 is the weakest year in the weakest division last season with one of the top defenses.. guess what they were missing? star players on offense..
you have to find balance and either daks here or we could end up 5 years + searching through many drew henson types looking for daks replacement and while building the defense we then find we lack scoring and still end up losing. They made a choice we didn't have any stars on defense to sign , not for lack of trying , they drafted many defenders that at this point have all been disappointments..
im sure they will hit on a few defenders soon that hopefully turns this around..they've made mistakes but they havent ignored defense they just picked wrong..it happens, there are a lot of teams that either have very good defense or very good offense.. its tough to a have formula to have both at the same time or everyone would win a SB..
I get the frustration, they overpaid to keep dak and the money is mostly invested on offense but that was not by design, they had no idea when picking all those years since 2014 along the OL, WR, RB and QB would end up being the superstars, they just happen to turn out that way..
we are due to find star on defense but sometimes you have to be truly bad and have forst overall pick, top 3 type bad seasons maynt in row to find guys on both die of the ball..
do you really beiver winston wins that sb last year or even gets ther with that defense? nope they went and got brady, gronk, fournette and others ..it was not just the defense that got them there they needed them ALL..what did the rams do they had great defense most of the season fell short and did what, go out and pay a ransom to get rid of Goff and get retread in Stafford.. who is SF trying to decide on replacing? a QB, they had great defense at one time, how about CHItown who are they coveting now, great defense but failing hard why? a QB , they lack stars all over the offense..cant score cant win even with that defense. Denver had great defense and couldn't win with like 10 qbs they got manning won a sb , what happened after manning left? they still cant find a qb and now the defense is old and overpaid and they are losing , A LOT of games..
need more examples? i mean it works both ways and yes defense has ben lacking while around here but having a balance is tough and that the formula that 30 other teams are always searching for, not many succeed..
