This is based on Gil Brandt's top 100. Because it's a top 100, I didn't want to go past the third round.

1st round (trade with Chicago for 20th pick) DT Christian Barmore, Alabama

COMMENT I could have gone with CB Greg Newsome here or S Trevon Moehrig, but I have the advantage of foresight.

Rank 35
Christian Barmore
Alabama · DT
Height: 6-5. Weight: 315.

Barmore is going to be a dangerous threat as a defensive tackle. His drop here has more to do with player movement around him than anything.

2nd round (pick 44) S Richie Grant

COMMENT Grant would be a great consolation prize for not taking Moehrig in the first.

Rank 45
Richie Grant
UCF · SAF
Height: 5-11 5/8. Weight: 200.

Grant has the great ball skills needed to play the position. In his four seasons of action, he logged 10 picks, 17 passes defensed and five forced fumbles.

2nd round (pick 52) CB Ifeatu Melifonwu, Syracuse

COMMENT I like Melinfonwu as well as or better than some of the corners who are ranked ahead of him. I think he will be a very solid starting corner in the NFL. Brandt has him ranked 52. For those who don't like Melifonwu, Brandt has Eric Stokes at 57 and Asante Samuel Jr. at 66.

3rd round (pick 75) LB Jabril Cox, LSU

COMMENT I was tempted to take OT Spencer Brown (ranked 78) instead of Cox (76th) or even double-dip at corner with Paulson Adebo, but we need to get some quality depth/future starters at linebacker as well.

3rd round (pick 99) DT Alim McNeill, North Carolina State

COMMENT Didn't have too many options left out of a top 100 for this pick, so I chose one who wasn't listed because I like the power and tenacity of McNeill as a 1-tech option.

Feel free to look at Brandt's rankings at https://www.nfl.com/news/gil-brandt-s-hot-100-2-0-top-prospects-in-2021-nfl-draft-class and tell me who you would have taken instead.

I went all defense because if the values are close, I believe we should choose defense over offense this year. I admit to reaching for Barmore, though, compared to how Brandt has him ranked, but that's based on how I value him.

Never happen because I like all these players.

I’d take this draft but we all know won’t happen.

The funny thing is some of these players may end up going later than we believe, while some may go earlier. Every year, we (and draft experts) undervalue some players and overvalue others. It'll be interesting to see which ones fall into that category.

A+ in my book.

Nice write Up!
I agree with a defensive heavy draft

That's what makes it soooo
Interesting!

Love the double dip at DT, and with the 2 best in this class even.

Well, Brandt has Onwuzurike as the best, but I don't agree with him. He's the better run defender because he makes better use of leverage than Barmore, but Barmore is superior as a pass rusher.

New rule.

If you don't understand that difference between 3 tech and 1 tech, you can't post mocks.

Yeah, in consecutive drafts we will have devoted a 2, a 3, and now a one to guys who play the exact same position. Sure, Jan

New Rule.

If you think we should be passing up legitimate talents at the 3T because we have Hill and Gallimore, resist the urge to go all homer on the rest of the board.

I'll do one with no trades:

10. Jaelan Phillips DE - Miami (FL) (Brandt ranking - #12)
44. Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah SS - Notre Dame (Brandt ranking - #51)
75. Paulson Adebo CB - Stanford (Brandt ranking - #77)
99. Alim McNeill DT - North Carolina State (Brandt ranking - outside Top 100)

Well poop, that would be a nice draft but I have serious doubts any of your last three will be there at these spots.

absolutely would love that draft, but I think that's pretty unrealistic IMO

New rule. If you don't understand that what a 3-tech is supposed to provide for this defensive scheme, you shouldn't talk about 3-techs.

The 2 and 3 that we spent on the position the last two years provided exactly a half-sack between them last year and also did a poor job against the run. The position is still a priority need.

Not my favorite because it starts off addressing a position where we actually have two quality starters and a decent backup. Doesn't address free safety where we have a player on a one-year deal coming off injury projected to be the starter. And waits later than I'd like to address corner, which means there's a strong possibility that we'd have to start either Lewis or Brown this year. Adebo might turn out to be great since this corner class is strong, but we really shouldn't expect to get a better player than Lewis (who also was drafted in the third round) at that point.

So other than McNeill, I'm not sure you addressed our most pressing needs.
