This is based on Gil Brandt's top 100. Because it's a top 100, I didn't want to go past the third round.
1st round (trade with Chicago for 20th pick) DT Christian Barmore, Alabama
COMMENT I could have gone with CB Greg Newsome here or S Trevon Moehrig, but I have the advantage of foresight.
Rank 35
Christian Barmore
Alabama · DT
Height: 6-5. Weight: 315.
Barmore is going to be a dangerous threat as a defensive tackle. His drop here has more to do with player movement around him than anything.
2nd round (pick 44) S Richie Grant
COMMENT Grant would be a great consolation prize for not taking Moehrig in the first.
Rank 45
Richie Grant
UCF · SAF
Height: 5-11 5/8. Weight: 200.
Grant has the great ball skills needed to play the position. In his four seasons of action, he logged 10 picks, 17 passes defensed and five forced fumbles.
2nd round (pick 52) CB Ifeatu Melifonwu, Syracuse
COMMENT I like Melinfonwu as well as or better than some of the corners who are ranked ahead of him. I think he will be a very solid starting corner in the NFL. Brandt has him ranked 52. For those who don't like Melifonwu, Brandt has Eric Stokes at 57 and Asante Samuel Jr. at 66.
3rd round (pick 75) LB Jabril Cox, LSU
COMMENT I was tempted to take OT Spencer Brown (ranked 78) instead of Cox (76th) or even double-dip at corner with Paulson Adebo, but we need to get some quality depth/future starters at linebacker as well.
3rd round (pick 99) DT Alim McNeill, North Carolina State
COMMENT Didn't have too many options left out of a top 100 for this pick, so I chose one who wasn't listed because I like the power and tenacity of McNeill as a 1-tech option.
Feel free to look at Brandt's rankings at https://www.nfl.com/news/gil-brandt-s-hot-100-2-0-top-prospects-in-2021-nfl-draft-class and tell me who you would have taken instead.
I went all defense because if the values are close, I believe we should choose defense over offense this year. I admit to reaching for Barmore, though, compared to how Brandt has him ranked, but that's based on how I value him.
