Getting ready to try the PFF Simulator for the first time

I've really come down to the idea that I want to maximize my picks....and try to draft no more than six guys. Six guys that have a chance to be starters or significant contributors. That kind of limits things somewhat.

I think in reality the positions that make sense are CB, S, DT, Edge, LB and OL...either OT or G (maybe a G that plays tackle for a year or two). Could maybe use two CB since we got Kazee at S with Neal also maybe playing some S. Diggs is the only true starting corner we have...the other two are best used as nickle corners in the slot. They may forgo OL since we have about 8 tackles on the roster...although not real sure of our backup plan for OL.

I did practice a few times just to get a feel for it....so, will post a mock here in just a little bit. I know once I do it I'm gonna be hooked.

Lord help me Jesus....start the first one and who is available at 10? Pitts. I am really, really high on him and it would take a huge offer from someone for me to consider trading down in that case. I know TE isn't a huge need, Jarwin and Schulz can hold down the fort. But we are talking about a guy that is expected to be on the level of Kelce, Waller, Kittle....some of the most dynamic TE's to ever play the game.

Yep, coming soon. I went ahead and bit the bullet....did a bunch of wheeling and dealing.

10 - Pitts - TE - Florida
26 - Trade up with Cleveland - Phillips - Edge - Miami
66 - Jabril Cox - LB - LSU
73 - Ifeatu Melifonwu - CB - Syracuse
113 - Jamar Johnson - S - Indiana

So right off the bat, Pitts adds something to the offense that there never really has been in Dallas. We have had great pass catchers at TE, but never one with the big play ability that Pitts offers.

So, having done that, I took a chance on the guy that the scouts and all the draftniks are talking is the best pass rusher in the draft. Yes, the concussions are scary, but damnit....players go down every day. Might as well swing for the fences. Phillips will make Lawrence and Gregory better, because there isn't a step down from the edge.

Next pick, Cox just was too good to pass up at the spot. Considered by most to be the best coverage linebacker in the draft and fits the mold of the smaller, speedy LB that current defenses require. Also takes the ball away.

Long and fast, Melifonwu is projected to start by his second season but there really isn't a reason he can't win the job this year. And he is a guy that could play free safety as well, although he is much better in press than he is in off coverage.

Finally, I grabbed Jamar Johnson from Indiana...ball skills, can play corner or safety. Average safety speed but good cover skills. Average tackler, but also a playmaker.

Was thrown the curveball with Pitts being available....but I feel good about the moves I made to get 5 players that all have a chance to be immediate contributors.

I know not getting an OT/OG is a risk, but we have Smith, Collins, Nseke, Steele and Knight at tackle. The three backups have starting experience so we should be ok unless we have both Smith and Collins go out again. I am more concerned short term about the interior. Martin is a rock, but counting on Biadasz is slightly scary and the LG position is unsettled with Williams or McGovern. Not really sure who would play center if there was an injury. Maybe look for a swing vet OG/C. Did Looney ever sign anywhere?

On defense, all 4 guys should compete for playing time. Phillips will help juice the pass rush, Cox walks in as a starter and Melifonwu and Johnson will compete.

Pretty happy with this one too. Again worked to maximize picks and got 6 picks in the top 100. Horn, Cox and Grant likely start this year. Jenkins can be the swing tackle or could even be moved into G. Called the most violent player in college football by Kollman. Grant is the perfect safety for this team. Togiai apparently has been mentioned for the Cowboys recently....great widebody would definitely fit in the rotation somewhere. Green is a Guard Center prospect that is described as nasty...love it. Davis keeps falling in the mocks....would take him all day at 134.

Per the Locked On Cowboys podcast, there’s a glitch with PFF that makes Jamin Davis and Kelvin Joseph stay available way too long. They’ve acknowledged it, but aren’t sure how to fix it. In other words, getting Davis past the 2nd rd is very, very unrealistic.
