The faulty premise that a slightly upgraded or average D will take us to the playoffs

32 teams in the league.

43.75% of the league is in the playoffs.
Getting in with a good offense with a low ranked defense, or a bad offense with a highly ranked defense is more than likely in the right division.

The offense has to show up in the 1st half also. That's the reason for some of the losses the last few years. Even with a better d dallas isn't a contender. They had good defenses in 17/18/19. Not elite but the best defenses since the 90s anyway. Along with having an elite rb and oline

If "contender" is referring to the Super Bowl, you're right. But the thread subject was only about going to the playoffs. If we win the NFC Least, we go to the playoffs, and a better defense could very well help that come to pass.

We didn't miss winning the NFC Least last year by too much, and that was with virtually no defense, and nearly all of our offense consisted of backups due to injuries.
If we stay relatively healthy this year, there's a good chance they win their division.

on paper we should be able to do just that. I am convinced that if Dak played, we would have made the playoffs over washington, but given the big flawed defense probably wouldn't have gone far in the playoffs.

To think that our Boys, with a good offence led by the Bus Driver Dak, needs only to have a slightly better D to succeed is ludicrous.

Yes, let us match up with a team with a great offence and a good D. Guess what happens.

Meanwhile, we are happy just to wish for an upgrade on D so we can compete,

I am not saying don't be optimistic, me fellow workaday fans. What I do caution against is believing that 6 defencive picks in the draft and several in FA will take us far or anywhere.

Hope for the best, me dewey-eyed fans, but don't just yet start planning yer Super Bowl party with banners that proclaim we are better than the 49ers, Green Bay, the Cards or Washington in the NFC or KC or 5 other AFC teams.
