1) Teams build through the draft.
2) The Cowboys have been drafting very well overall.
3) Usually have to overpay for trades and FAs. Cowboys don’t do this.
4) Cowboys often overpay to keep their players. Jerry is too loyal to players and fans. Yes, the majority of Cowboy fans wanted Dak, Elliott, Lawrence, et al at any price.

Chiefs would be nothing without Mahomes, Hill, and Kelce. All players they drafted.

One can talk Bills, Bengals, and Browns but they are not some super team. Let’s see where they are after they pay the QBs a second monster contract.

Right now, the Cowboys can compete with any team out there.

You can make an agenda literally out of anything you want. Small snippet with not enough research. It simply just fits the agenda. Good job Coward. The only one that bothers me at this point is Jaylon Smith.

Dallas has enough LB help now to just let the man play down hill. He will be better now......I hope.

It's about getting the balance right.

Some teams overpay for FAs and the Cowboys have overpaid some players they drafted.

So many resources have been pumped into the offense (two first round picks on wide reveivers for starters) that it has to perform to an elite level and not turnover the ball

The Cowboys last four seasons: 33-31 regular season, 1-2 in the playoffs, This is what they've paid handsomely to keep together?

Someone actually compared Dallas to the Chiefs. :muttley:

The Chiefs are 48-16 the last four seasons, 6-3 in playoffs and 1-1 in SBs. THAT is what you pay to keep together.

What was the score of the most recent game between the Cowboys and Chiefs?

Mahomes is much better than Prescott. QB is the most important part of the game.

Newsflash: Mahomes has played really, really well. Hence the huge winning record.

If the Cowboys played the Chiefs today, I like the Cowboys chances.

Continue on with your whine - 25 years blah, blah, blah. Have a tissue.

The Cowboys ‘can compete’ and have competed the past 4 seasons. Have not put together a playoff run or had success in big games.

I am drinking green tea. Send me a self-addressed envelope and I’ll gladly send you some. From the Shizuoka region in Japan.

We must be watching different Cowboy teams.
Complements for the tea choice!

Building through the draft works but signing a top tier free agent or two helps significantly.
The Cowboys proved that they can draft. Their problem is they wont push themselves over the top in free agency.

They've done well offensively, specifically at Oline in both acquisition and development.
WR as well.

Defensively, they have done poorly at all 3 stages of evaluation, acquisition and development.

As others have mentioned in the past, good fortune/luck favored them on the last 2 QBs of the past 15 years or the near .500 w/l record could be well below that mark. Let that kinda sink in, lol.

Second contracts to their own and Free Agency acquisitions are total fails.

Coach selections another total failure.
My .02.

As QBs go, so goes the team. Get a great QB and chances are the team will do pretty well. Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Mahomes, Romo, Dak, Rodgers, Roth, etc.

Second contracts are tough for any team under the salary cap. Let's see how Clev, Balt, and Buff do paying their QBs market value of $40M/year. Jets and SF took a huge gamble with Wilson and Lance. The Jets are trying to mimic the 2016 Cowboys with good OL carrying a rookie QB to success.

To make it worst the 2 positions they've needed the most help in the last 3 years (interior defensive line and safety) are the 2 positions that mid tier starters aren't that expensive...... (those 2 positions offer the best bang for your buck in free agency).

Another issue has been drafting being unstable. Offensively they've drafted tons of franchise starters but defensive has been garbage.

How many franchise defensive players have they drafted with a top 100 pick from 2010-2019? (D-law is the only one I can think of, not a good thing)

Agreed. Love the whole "cowboys draft amazing" when to my knowledge D-law has been the only consistent franchise defensive player drafted in the first 3 rounds from 2010-2019

The thing about the draft is you have to take quality picks and not take a flier on someone with an injury history too early. They seem to do well on the offensive side of the ball, but defensively they get the guy with a lot of potential but has some serious health concerns. They also like to take the guy on defense with motivational issues too. It's like they are doing their homework for offense and just blindly picking guys on the defense.

Yeah,
No doubt a true franchise QB covers a lot of team warts as they say. And I'm not a Dak guy either.

My point was more the poor return on defensive drafting for over the past couple decades.

I'm thinking HOF Ware of course is a hit...
Then who to hang their defensive draft hat on after that? I know, bear with me in I know DWares don't grow on trees nor his caliber of play.
But who's next?
Newman?

Are you ready to say Tank Hot Boy is a hit?
I'm not.

Who was a true impact/difference maker type defender for more than one contract's worth of time as a Cowboy that was drafted? The healthy version of Sean Lee? Does that get an honorable mention or does his lack of durability ruin it? Probably, the latter right?

And 6-10, 8-8, 10-6, and 9-7 ain't competitive. It's .500 which they have been for 2 and a half decades now. No more., no less.

And as stated previously, they suck at paying their own's second contracts, acquiring quality free agents and choosing coaches. They suck at it.

the cowboys over the years have built a good team through the draft....to have that solid line, a great RB, a franchise qb and some solid defenders all through the draft (say what you will some of our defenders are pretty good)

the issue has been the coaching......if coaching decisions during gameday ever got on par with the draft decisions we'd have 3 titles by now

Teams usually have to overpay in a trade or to sign a FA.
Cowboys don't make many trades, just like most NFL teams.
Cowboys usually don't overpay for FAs. Was Deion the last big FA the Cowboys signed?
Cowboys usually overpay their players before they become FAs.
