If you want to know what an organization values, look at how and where they spend their money. I always find it interesting to check how our Cowboys spend their salary cap dollars each year.

Here is a list of what the Cowboys spend by sides of the ball as well as position and how it ranks in the NFL. This is obviously including some players that will eventually not be on the roster after cuts.

OFFENSE:
43 players; $124.880 million; 59.48% of the total cap space. NFL RANK: 2
DEFENSE:
38 players; $83.543 million; 39.7% of the cap space; NFL RANK: 20
SPECIAL TEAMS:
4 players; $5.88 million; 2.66% of the cap space: NFL RANK: 15

POSITION RANKINGS

  • QB- 4 players; $24.8 million; 11.8% of the cap: NFL RANK: 8
  • RB- 6 players; $17.6 million; 8.38% of the cap; NFL RANK: 1
  • WR- 14 players; $37.29 million; 17.76% of the cap; NFL RANK: 5
  • TE- 6 players; $9.9 million; 4.73% of the cap; NFL RANK: 16
  • OL- 14 players; $36.11 million; 17.2% of the cap; NFL RANK: 12
  • DL- 13 players; $37.7 million; 17.96% of the cap; NFL RANK: 13
  • LB- 10 players; $25.1 million; 11.99% of the cap; NFL RANK: 11
  • Secondary- 19 players; $26.05 million; 12.41% of the cap; NFL RANK: 24
  • STs- 4 players; $5.58 million; 2.66% of the cap; NFL RANK: 15
The 3 positional areas that jump out to me are RB, WR, and the Secondary. Being overpaid at RB and WR is the “Jerry effect”. IMO, WRs and RBs should never be that high on cap space.

Great analysis Hazey. The RB does stand out badly and the shame of it all is the Jones boys could have let Zeke play out any season before deciding to set the market on his salary. Now we have even less to fix the defense.

And unless I’m terribly wrong (which is very possible, :)) Zeke will never be as good as he was 2016-18. We are literally paying top NFL money for a position where you can find similar talent for way less money. Same for WRs.

Forget being a great mod, you are one of the single greatest Thread generators on this site.
Truly food for thought in almost of them that makes you think for a bit.

Were you an Editor in a past life?

I remember working for a Sr. Editor 2 decades ago at a paper (not saying which one as it would obviously be polarizing) that was stunningly sharp at giving assignments ("topics") that got us to be like "Of Course!".

You remind me of him.

While true.....I think Zeke is also a leader of this team. Not saying he's not replaceable but I think he means more to this team than just being a running back. He's also their franchise QB's best friend as well.

Running back I agree...but receiver....you have a top 5 unit at a top 5 price. It also seems a little skewed because who are they paying outside of Cooper? Seems like everyone else is on rookie deals.

Interesting... but not surprising... secondary is the only position group that we pay in the bottom half of the league. They really don't value the secondary.

.....lets see if we can get at least 2 more good years out of him. Perhaps, 1,200+ in both, would be nice. This will be his telling year.

The draft picks at RB and WR are even more telling:
4 - Zeke
17 - Lamb
27 - Cooper, and it was looking more like a mid teens pick when we traded, and we got only half a year on a rookie contract, and then paid 5th year option money
81 - Gallup

JJ gave Zeke a huge extension 2 years before he needed to and reset the running back market......and here is Nick Chubb, arguably better than Zeke, just now getting an extension valued at 3 years $36.6M with $20M guaranteed.....compare that to Zeke's 6-year $90M extension with $50M guaranteed.

Jerry screwed the pooch yet again.

Think about this…approximately 25% of our total cap space is dedicated to RB and WR.
