This new taunting rule needs to go

I don't know if this should go here or the NFL zone.

Nobody was asking for the NFL to start penalizing taunting even heavier than they already do. These are grown men out there, playing a violent sport, breaking legs and liquifying each others brains, giving each other early onset alzheimers, but taunting is now a big no-no?

I understand if a guy is in another guy's face and a fight is potentially at risk, but a Houston was penalized for taunting yesterday for spinning a ball after a TD. Seriously? That's been an NFL TD celebration for decades.

Rodger Sherman from The Ringer had this to say -

"Who asked for this? The answer is Giants owner John Mara, a member of the NFL’s competition committee who said in August that he’s “sick and tired” of taunting and that “nobody wants to see a player taunting another player.” I can confirm this is not true. I want to see players taunt other players. I want to watch a channel called NFL TauntZone with no football—just defensive backs letting receivers know they’re trash and defensive linemen doing provocative sack dances."

I agree however we know they will call it so our guys need to be smart enough not to do it. In football much like life there are rules I do not agree with but you follow it or be prepared to suffer the consequence

Yea, it's a stupid rule that should go away next year. Wanna remove language with race involved in this day and age? I guess but even then it's still meh to me unless it's over the top. Smack talk on the field has been around even before guys get into high school football.

I can see both sides.. They need to try to keep taunting to a minimum because you can't be letting a bunch of high T dudes be getting into each other's faces all the time. That's just asking for games getting stopped down repeatedly because of all out hockey fights. At the same time I see no issue with guys celebrating a great play. It's a fine line.. but guys should be smart enough to talk it. Celebrate with your teammates, stay the hell away from the guys on the other team. It's really not that hard..

Highly-paid, grown men, professional athletes need a rule to protect them from having their feelings hurt.

I’m pretty sure it’s not for the players feelings it’s for the get back to the huddle crowd.

Well, we're in a time where feelings is more important to some than others.. I'm sure the push didn't come internally but outside politically.

I think it was minor with those, but if many players hadn't been over-the-top with it for the last 20 years, it wouldn't be neccessary for the flags. NFL is partially responsible, for letting it go on for so long. Now they are TOO harsh...

....Charger player scores TD, spins the football on cowboys face. Glad we got the flag, that's a ....no ..no.

They actually picked that flag up because of the illegal shift penalty before the snap on that play.. which essentially meant that the taunting didn't happen. Frankly I found THAT to be a garbage call because they didn't blow the play dead so the unsportsmanlike penalty should have been allowed to stand. I mean if he got up and threw a punch at the guy would that also have been negated by the other penalty?

...wait a minute, the taunting penalty wasn't called? Think it was. Found this> https://www.foxnews.com/sports/nfl-taunting-rules-under-fire-week-2

The flag was thrown but they only marked off the 5 yards for the illegal shift .. The 15 yards for the taunting was not.. Here is the play by play

  • 1st & Goal at DAL 2
(5:42 - 4th) (Shotgun) J.Herbert pass short left to J.Cook for 2 yards, TOUCHDOWN NULLIFIED by Penalty. PENALTY on LAC, Illegal Shift, 5 yards, enforced at DAL 2 - No Play. Penalty on LAC-J.Cook, Unsportsmanlike Conduct, declined.
I'm sure it was not "declined" by the Cowboys..

I like it. You are allowed to celebrate without jawing in someone else's face, just like scoring a touchdown. It's that simple. Make the play, and go back to the huddle.

I’d lay 1000 you are over the age of 50 possibly 60

Based on the rule that was the proper call. So was the helmet removal the week before that the refs let slide.
