My thoughts after Eagles - Cowboys game

First thought is it was nice to have a game that was not a nail-biter. Every now and then a blow-out is good for the fans.

But I never take too much away from games like this. The Cowboys played a great game and were clearly prepared. Every game is a new game where anything can happen.

The #1 positive coming out of this game is the heart the Cowboys showed. Coming into a division game with 9 guys unavailable I expected the worst. Boy, was I wrong. This team showed the spirit that has been missing for years. It is what they need to win a championship. Not sure where it comes from but they need it every game.

Zack Martin is the best OG in the league. I know there are arguments to be made for other OGs but he is playing like a monster this year. On the 4th down QB sneak that failed (I thought he was in) Dak tried to push in behind Biadasz. He should have slid over and gotten behind Zack. He would have scored easily.

Dak is an elite QB right now.

Zeke is still good but I am not ready to say he is worth $15 million.

Osa Odighizuwa is going to be a really good player. Micah Parsons is already a really good player. The 2021 draft could be exceptional if Kelvin Joseph turns out to be any good.

Dalton Schultz is so much better than Blake Jarwin. I never understood all this hype about Jarwin. Schultz is outplaying him in every facet of the game. Too bad he is a free agent after this season. They are going to miss him. Someone is going to offer him a bundle and the Cowboys will not be able to afford to keep him.

I admit I had serious reservations about Terence Steele filling in for Collins, but he has surprised me two games now. He went against a pretty good DE last night and held his own. He made one mistake I saw that led to a sack of Dak but otherwise he was a force in the run game on a number of plays.

The defense played as a team and that is why they were so successful.

Diggs is a shockingly good CB. Also something the Cowboys have been missing for years.

On the negative side, I have been saying since training camp the combination of Connor Williams and Biadasz was my biggest concern on offense. The two linemen have the same weaknesses and the same strength. But Vita Vea showed the weakness. Linval Joseph did too, and last night both Cox and Hargrave bullied Williams and Biadasz on passing downs, once causing a fumble for a TD in the end zone. This problem is not going away. Williams has shown this weakness since he was drafted so he is not getting any stronger. Biadasz is only in his second year so maybe there is hope. But every big strong tackle in the league is going to use the same bull rush to push these guys into Dak's face on passing downs. Both Williams and Biadasz were on the backs numerous times in the game. Williams had 3 holding calls. At some point this is going to be the difference between a win and a loss. Maybe it already was in the Bucs game. If I had to make a prediction, it would be that next year neither of these guys is starting for the Cowboys.

Otherwise, what a great night for the Cowboys.

I was never that high on Jarwin, as I thought his game was limited. he is not a very good route runner and with all the athleticism, he can't get separation and he loses almost all high balls. we should cut jarwin and keep schultz. hard to find a TE.....

there is a trade off with CWilliams. He's got that movement ability that this team likes
and he handles blocking until he faces the Via's,Hargraves of the NFL [just like Biadasz]. With McGovern you lose the movement tool.
I think their seen as adequat by the coaches and Biadasz needs time.

Good last point about the interior's lack of strength. However, to be fair, Eagles are really good up front, especially inside. With this being said, I do believe McGovern is pushing to become a starter and I expect 1 will be benched at some point this yr.

- Hurts suffers a pure passer. He’s a gimmicky QB that missed several open and wide open targets, woefully underthrown deep ball that went INT( brown) ..passes behind receivers.

- Philly new HC is gonna remind me of the Bears HC Matt Nagy. He totally abandoned the run (only 2 carries to RB for much of the 3 quarters ?) and placed even more issues on his QB.

I am nor sure what we can sign Shultz for but we could drop Jarwin and save a few million. Then we probably won't be able to keep Gallup. So you have to sign Shultz or draft a TE and WR a bit higher depending on what you could sign Wilson for.

- Though zeke still quite does not show 2016 burst, he’s showing 2019 "angry" runs that’s so very powerful, difficult vs lone defenders. He’s driving piles of defenders, taking care of the ball.

- Pollard avg. 5.0 per carry, and ran well in rotation. He’s been a bigger role, bigger factor

- Schultz continues to shine vs pass, just has a terrific knack and feel for zone openings and rapport with the QB, and he’s been so consistent in this area. Dunno what depth chart says but he’s really the no.1 lead TE here.

- C-Wilson has been a fine sub for Gallup for most part. Doesn’t have Gally’s physical ability, but he’s made his share of big plays too as a 3rd WR.

- Dak snuck between Martin and Biadasz,.. and still couldn’t get that inch for the TD on 4th and goal at the one.

- McCarthy is proving to be a lousy game manager, and that’s sad for a guy that is a walk around HC.
I’m just not seeing his full worth.

- Did I see a QB design run called by Kellen ? .. luckily Prescott slid and took the loss. But Kellen .?
Glad that Dak is content with not risking unnecessary hits

- Lamb made a huge deep catch early in game, but neither he nor Cooper didn't spark big numbers i thought
we'd needed to have vs Philly, seems much of damage was done by RBs and TEs than gaudy WR numbers.
And that will be scary for opposing teams, defenses. !!

- Steele has held up quite well as a sub starter, as surprise is not the weak link that Williams/ Biadasz have been.

- Williams had not one, but 3 holding flags ..and Biadasz has struggled in 3 str8 game vs pass. Not just lack brute play strength, but overcommitting too.

- Despite Dak sacked 4 times, and problems in interior, OL still solid overall. we still ran the ball well, with both RBs

- As impressive as this blowout win was vs NFC East foe there were a few blown assignments and bloopers (fumbled snaps, no zeke to hand off to) and we’re still very needy in red zone.

Why worry about Zeke's money? Who give a crap? He's been paid and there's nothing you can do about it. Instead of giving a man credit, bring up something to put him down!

I was reluctant about DaVonta Smith pre draft over size , taller more physical corners can give him problems. That said the lack of carries Siriani gave Sanders played right into Dallas hand and made the Eagles defense seem like it was on the field all night. Bad coaching job in Philly .

DEFENSE

- Even if Parsons does not touch the QB, he forces drive- killing holding calls as a pass rusher. (Ditto with Gregory).
And his lateral pursuit speed has awesome. I think we really lucked out with Parsons vs Joe Horn Jr. or Surtain Jr.
Even as a rookie, Parson is bringing a new tone, swagger, mentality and difference making presence to this
defense.

- I really liked what I’ve been seeing from rookie Osa as he develops, he’s holding his own vs run, and you can see
his twisting leverage skills as a rusher.

- Canaday finally got playing time, and he quickly got burnt deep. That’s gonna cool off talk vs Lewis.

- Don’t be surprised if Kearse permanently replaces Donovan Wilson as starting safety.
He's another that has surprised me in being more than what i'd expected. Had him pegged as just a special teams guy.

- Diggs has been balll hawkin' ’ and been a huge difference maker for this D” and he’ll be more complete if he minimizes
the big plays vs him. His INT for a pick six, was another fork in Philly's air balloon.
Huge difference between a Diggs vs Byron Jones !

- this team is capable taking the ball away, getting turnovers, a far part different than the Marinelli, Richard defenses.
Can’t wait to get our front runners back among the DL.

- was LB Keanu Neal missed ? Was Bradley Anae missed ? Thought LBs played very well

- Our safeties have shown up and been solid in these 3 games.
- Not sold on A Brown, but he did come up with key INT in deep coverage, If we can keep hiding him and win ..
- Thought team has gotten solid rotation play from Urban as well.
- i'd like to re-watch game and see how Gholston faired out

Hurts was really "hurt " (pun intended) and dismantled by Cowboys D" . he just could not generate anything until
Defense let him get a gimme in garbage time.

If not for Dak's fumble in end zone, we'd really have pinned Philly offense back

SPECIAL TEAMS

- Greg Z seems like he’s gonna have his bloopers along with some big critical kicks; a totally adventure
we're gonna have to journey.

- Are we gonna be a real threatening team in the return game .. ?

- Punter Anger has been booming it .. he got us out of a hole near our goal line, and further helped by
the returner's foot out of bounds, and a hold call that further back up Philly to their own 20+ line.

The coaching should have never left Williams or The center 1 on 1 with Cox or Hargrove, they proved they were not ready for that. Chip them, double them , something.

I have been pretty hard on Dak over the years - mainly due to his inconsistent play - but through the 5 games last year and the 3 games this year, he has been so much better with being consistent in his footwork and it's great to see. His pocket awareness and ball security still need some work but if this is the best he gets, its still better than most. A fumble is always, Always, Always the ball carrier's fault, so yes I blame Dak or Zeke or whoever when they fumble regardless of anything else.

Moore is doing a really good job of mixing up the play calls and formations. I wish they would not get so cute inside the Red Zone though.

The clock management style of MM is something. There are often times I disagree with whoever the coach is based on what I think is the right thing to do, but I can mostly understand the decision even if I disagree with it.. not with MM, a lot of his decisions are complete head scratchers that make Zero sense no mater what angle you look at it from. Surprising from a coach with his experience.

Parsons - wow - nothing left to say

Diggs - I hope we see this fire in him every game now, not just when we play other high profile Alabama draftees.

Overall - really good game. I

McGovern is a better player than Williams and I've been saying it for over a year.

He is also the future while it makes little sense to retain Williams on a second deal.

But for whatever reason, the powers that be don't agree.

If I had to guess I'd say they are trying to maximize the potential comp pick that they love so much.

I am still not sure what the Dallas Cowboys coaching staff sees when it comes to OL.

CWilliams seems to have the feet and strength of a tackle. He does not seem to have the brute strength of a guard.
Teams are going to get quick, BIG, strong men over the C and Guards because that is the quickest way to the QB.
CWilliams seems to have enough strength and good quickness to be a good OL, just not a good inside Guard. Sometimes I think evaluators get too tied up in arm length and not enough in functional strength when it comes to where OL should be playing.

Biadasz may be good -- next year. It takes a couple to get old enough for the muscles to harden.
CWiliams will never have that brute strength.....at least it doesn't seem like it to me.

Dallas once upon a time started the Kitchen at guard trying to get enough weight to stop bull rush of the Refridgerator, etc. I understand wanting athletic Guards to pull, but there is something to be said for huge guys who can move people as well.

Cowboys can get out of Jarwins contract after this season and pay Schultz, if they want to.

We are the division leader. Let’s get it done week after week. I loved watching us fight back after the sack fumble. Used to bring the team down but this team was not going to be held down.

I remember what John Madden said about Clay Shiver, when he was drafted to play center: "He just isn't big enough." Biadasz seems just not strong enough right now.

Philly had the #2 defense coming into the game. Tampa Bay's defense won the Super Bowl last year. The Chargers beat the Chiefs holding the Great Mahomes to only 260 yards and 2 int's. That's 3 top defenses that Dak has played at an elite level.
