Jordan & Jake Podcast 9/30
Jordan Gross (Former Panthers OT) and Jake Delhomme (Former Panthers QB)

Jake:
  • Crowd was not in the Houston game. Almost like they had given up on the season.
  • Good long drives in second half of Houston game, even with McCaffrey out.
  • We lost a few players though. Going to hurt.
  • I really enjoyed the Manning-Cast. I still like broadcasters because they get inside info from coaches on schemes, but you get an inside track on how the QB thinks with the Mannings. You get to see Eli's personality and his even keel. Peyton was always the one who got the attention. As a former QB, I like the appreciation they show for good plays. An example were the Peyton comments the week before on Aaron Rogers and how, "I could never make a throw like that."
  • I give us credit for Saints performance week 2 but they were down 4 really good starters and had other problems. We're going against the best offense. Anxious to see how our best defense plays. Zeke is a battering ram, but Pollard has some electricity. How will we defend Cooper and CeeDee? I think Dak is playing lights out. They had every chance to beat Tampa Bay, they beat the Chargers who are a good team, and they destroyed Philly. We will be challenged on defense.
  • I don't like the matchups because Jaycee Horn is injured. We made the trade with CJ Henderson, which is rare.
  • Maybe we can stay under the radar which we have so far. Tom Brady vs Patriots will get all the attention, and the Rams in LA being #1, but these are the "Mighty Media Cowboys." In my neck of the woods (Louisiana), there's a ton of Cowboys fans. Half of them weren't even born when the Cowboys won Super Bowls. Enough is enough, be good into the postseason and then you can talk.
  • Cowboys may have stolen Micah Parsons. I think he would have been Top 5 if he hadn't sat out.
  • Never been to AT&T Stadium. I hope the press box is a better location than Houston. We were dangling from the roof in Houston. (Jordan says its a great setup and sweet stadium)
  • My take on Sam Darnold. Playing within system. When a QBs feet are quiet, he is seeing the game very well. He got hit a lot in the Jets game. He made a big completion on 3rd and long and had to sit in and take it until his guy dropped his hips. He looks more confident now. He's a burly kid, good size, and tough. Accuracy and feet work are what have stood out to me in Carolina.
  • The TE for Corner trade, CJ Henderson. He was a top ten pick. I can't remember last time someone that high was traded next year. It's a new regime with Urban Meyer who is cleaning slate. Dan Arnold did fine at TE, but it was emergence of Tommy Tremble at TE who can also play that FB/HB role that probably forced the trade.
Jordan:
  • Cowboys had dominant performance Monday. I love watching MNF. I enjoy the Manning-Cast, but can't watch it entire game because not enough feedback for entire game. They have a 10 game contract. Good gig.
  • The Cowboys are the NFL team you would think an NFL team would look like. Big LT, celebrity players at skill positions, fast defensive players.
  • Coach Rhule shouldn't let the Panthers think they're big and bad yet. I live in Idaho, and even here people are telling me the Panthers are looking good. But 2 rookie QBs, a Saints team that had all odds against them, it's awesome all the stats we have, but this game will really say what quality the Carolina Panthers are because the Cowboys are just a better opponent than anyone we've faced. So it's not like the wheels fall off if we don't win. It's almost like the other games felt like preseason games.
  • I think there was some discord between Henderson and Meyer. Feels college-like. Panthers need to be patient though on him to learn the defense.
Panther Talk Podcast 9/28
Coach Matt Rhule, GM Scott Fitterer, Morgan Fox (starting DE)

Coach Rhule:
  • CJ Henderson was a guy we did a lot of work on last year's draft so knew him well. He reached out to us after Jaycee was hurt.
  • Scott did great job doing it fast before others could get in. Hated to lose Dan Arnold. Great teammate. But opportunity to improve our defense, all of our nickel starters from first game are gone.
  • Quality corners are absolutely at a premium in today's league. We play a lot of nickel and dime.
  • Chubba Hubbard - McCaffrey's backup. I think sometimes they just need carries. Sometimes he made moves too fast. As he got reps, did much better job making cuts. Pulled pile some, we saw his explosiveness. I told him at halftime this is why I drafted you.
  • Tommy Tremble, I refer to him as the next Jeremy Chinn. A guy who can be TE/FB/WR. He's good on special teams. He can run a speed sweep, not a lot of big guys can. He works hard. We're going to find ways now to get him the ball.
  • Ian Thomas, think he's done great. Complete player. Blocks well . Pleased with his TE play.
  • Matt Paradis (Center) excellent player. Didn't have noise last year, silent cadence, so new for him and QB. He's been a key to Sam's success. They've done a nice job together.
  • I thought our offensive line played their best game last Thursday night against Houston. They're getting better every week. Randy Gregory, Micah Parsons, we don't have it easy this week. We'll get ready for them.
Scott:
  • We thought CJ was a rare athlete. Instincts for zone. Can press. You can tell why he was #9. We'll get him coached up and be ready to roll. Talking to (TE) Arnold was one of the hardest things I've had to do. Everyone felt good about him, he's a leader. When Matt & I sat down to talk to him yesterday we told him how much we appreciate him and hope we cross paths again.
  • CJ can assimilate quickly with his athleticism, but guys learn different rates, we'll see.
  • I thought some guys stepped up when Christian went down in Houston. Sam especially. Defense continued to pay great. Saw some improvement on Oline.
  • We don't have many close friends in Dallas. But fun, unique place to play.
Morgan:
  • It was good to get a few days extra off.
  • Me and Derrick Brown (DT) working together to improve the pass rush.
  • Best defense I've been with. Such higher energy. Excited to be a part of this team.
  • Benefit for us how much we rotate players in.
  • Cowboys, good team. Very talented oline, QB and skill positions. We have to play our best to win. Watched MNF to pick up anything I could.

Yes sir, thank you brother. The Panthers know they are going up against a loaded team. It will be interesting to see our offense clash with their defense.

I've said before though, the only team that can stop Dallas offense is Dallas. If we come out and play a clean game I expect us to pull away in the second half by two scores.

I also think we can pressure Darnold into mistakes. Hopefully our opportunistic defense takes advantage.

  • A very interesting quote about the Henderson deal. Now it sounds more like the Jaguars being in panic mode and just taking the first offer. Dummies.

  • “Scott did great job doing it fast before others could get in. Hated to lose Dan Arnold. Great teammate. But opportunity to improve our defense, all of our nickel starters from first game are gone.”

The more I hear, the more I think Urban Meyer is going to go down in flames.

But... I remember the tough time they gave Jimmy his first year, and even Spurrier made it more than one season with all his shortcomings.

You might be right, but I think any GMs who talk publicly lean on the "we got such a deal" when they acquire someone - think of how Jerry talks about the draft. So I'm a little skeptical that they didn't shop him around. Henderson's rep has become that he doesn't love the game, and that's generally not going to generate much in trade interest. That said, it would be hard to pass up an opportunity for a legit top-15 first round talent for a backup tight end and a swap of 3rd/5th round picks. Especially considering Carolina's pick should be in the 80s (late in the third round) and the Jax pick in the top of the fifth round or about 145ish.

Don't understand that trade at all for Jax. A top 10 CB draft pick just last year for a journeyman TE????

I wonder if Meyer has the stomach for it? To handle the workload, stress, and criticism? He had a pretty cushy broadcast gig and he could likely easily go back to that. But it’s likely he’d be fired before he quit and be able to sit back and collect the rest of that huge contract.

I would have been all over it. Even with our recent investments in the position. You just don’t pass up a steal of a deal like that.

I think one of the comments alluded to it being something personal between the player and coach/staff. That’s the only explanation I can believe.

There have been rumors questioning Henderson’s love for the game, maybe there’s something to it? I would have given up that third to find out.

Meyers is a rookie coach who seems to be overwhelmed while Ruhl seems to be the prodigy rookie coach, who probably thinks he can do more with the guy, especially since he vetted him so much last year thinking they might draft him. He knows what he's getting, he knows the situation in Jacksonville, this could end up being a steal for Carolina by end of next year when the kid has been coached by the right people. We don't manage pro football million dollar contracts, but it's no different than what we do in our jobs. I've had people who the previous boss thought were junk and were all-stars for me. If Dallas could trade Schultz and a 3rd rounder for another Diggs, they would be tempted too, and they don't have as much depth as Carolina at TE nor an immediate need for CB like Carolina does.

Absolutely. Unless there's something egregious that hasnt been made public yet.

Henderson isn't another Diggs, but I get your point. Two things can both be true, 1. Henderson doesn't love football and 2. Urban is too full of himself to think he has to put up with anyone who doesn't buy into his ish.

Was thinking earlier today....is his heart in it?

Is he going by way of Saban or does he really want to make it work at this level?

Jimmy Johnson may be a good guy to ask about being a college hero then an NFL doormat and how to deal with it.

I can't guess about Meyer, but I know he has had health issues and already has plenty of money.

That'll take the fight out of many.

Yeah, if these moves pan out (Henderson and Horn), the Panthers can be good in a hurry, and for a while.

To the best of my knowledge, head coach contracts are guaranteed. So Meyer likely got $10 million or more on a multi year deal. As long as he doesn’t quit, he should get all of that, fired or not.

Appreciate the recap. Always nice to see what the other teams says. Even about their own team.

I got the impression from this that it's a well run organization. Coach and GM are smart, have each others backs, and just come across impressive. Aikman said he knew Rhule would be a good one in the NFL, and I'm starting to believe it too.
