This defense still has a ways to go. Pass defense is killing us

If the Panthers game tells us anything it's that if Diggs goes out we are in trouble.

The Panthers scored and easy 14 points with Diggs taken the rest of the day off.
It was garbage time and they played soft coverage. Sure missing Diggs will hurt but they aren't as bad as it looks because of soft coverage

Nothing wrong with being realistic. The D HAS to get stingy to make a run in the playoffs. The takeaways are game changers but we can’t count on Diggs getting two INTs every game which means we’re going to have to force three and outs at some point.

So far, with the exception of turnover ratio (ranking 1st) we've flip from one of 2020 worst defensive rankings to another one for 2021. In other words, last season we had the league's worst rushing defense ( dead last) and spent the offseason hell-bent on fixing it. The good news is it so far this season, we are ranked 6th rushing yards allowed BUT the bad news, we are dead last passing defense ( 31st ). That is, 31st in total passing yards allowed and passing yards allowed per game.

Not trying to be negative Nancy here but a couple of things to keep in mind.....

  • Quinn is a former Dline coach
  • We are 16th in points allowed per game. IF we can improve this to at least top 10, the 31st yards ranking issue won't matter much. Why? As Belichick says ( many here know I've repeated this a 1000 times) only two defensive stats really impacts the game, turnover ratio and scoring defense ( keeping points off the board).
  • What happens if we don't fix the passing yard issue? Look no further than the Panthers letting them back in the game and nearly lost. This has been an issue with his defenses, giving up points late in games
  • Also, teams with a good QB AND Oline can put up a lot of points, especially late in the game when your D is tired.
  • On January 22, 2017, Quinn's Falcons won the NFC Championship against the Green Bay Packers 44–21, clinching a berth to play in Super Bowl LI against the New England Patriots.[15] Up 21–3 at halftime and 28–3 in the third quarter, the Falcons blew the largest lead in Super Bowl history and lost the game in overtime by a score of 34–28.[16][17]
You speak the truth. But you will get maligned because pointing out flaws after a win is not ALLOWED around here.

Of course I am happy with a win. And I know you are as well. But like you, I know that the Tom Brady's and Matt Staffords and Aaron Rodgers are licking their chops to play against this defense. So we have to be proactive in preparing for the BIG picture, while celebrating victories over Sam Darnold, Jalen Hurts etc...

Getting guys like Jaylon Smith off the field is a good start. Getting guys like DeMarcus Lawrence back (yes we NEED him) will also help. And hoping our 2nd round pick CB (Joseph) can play will also help.

A consistent run game all season will also be big for the defense. Make no mistake about it...team wise we look good...but this defense is not ready for a big time postseason run...and we will need the coaches, offense and special teams to protect this defense until it gets better.

I love pointing out flaws. Especially after a win.

Our defense is playing great by today’s NFL standards and looking at yards or giving up points when we’re up multiple scores is ridiculous.

If you want to complain about the defense then complain about the mental mistakes with the blown assignments. That’s a legit complaint.

The recipe right now is Dallas gets a lead.

Opposing offense forced to be more aggressive.

Pass rush, especially Parsons, tees off on the QB.

Turnovers and sacks happen.

Marino and Fouts would throw for 400 and the opponent would throw for 500. It’s a losing battle and what they would have done to have an above average defense.

Im just using your logic, or is that not acceptable now
No you're not. You're trying to twist it now because you got caught being a hypocrite. You're not fooling anyone.

If it's garbage time for the Panthers then you should keep that same energy when it's the Cowboys, right? Hypocrisy is not a good look.

well, yes, the pass defense has to produce. I don't think anyone should be surprised to see parts of the defense struggling, given last year we were bottom sucking in all areas. I think critical to all of this is the run defense. if you can't stop the run, then you are doomed to suck. and suck we did.

this year, pass defense is struggling a bit, but its a case of half dozen of one, and 6 of the other. pressures, sacks and interceptions are much better. those are pass defense metrics. yards is not. passing TDs is improved. however, looking at couple of different factors since its early in the season. We played four offenses that are top 10 in passing offense. so in those cases you often end up somewhere in the middle with the defense vs. offense. and against Philly, Carolina, they were a bunch of yards and TDs in the 4th quarter when the game was over and we played prevent (something we can't do and DQ has to fix).

so its early. and then here come the giants, who are top 10 in passing. so expect a few more yards, but more of the same with pressure, sacks and interceptions.

the good thing is we rank middle of the pack in scoring defense and that's key....and take away those meaningless late scores and we are in good shape when it counts.....so give it a few more games....

Things that killed us last year are still present, which is why I think this thread has some merit. The turnovers are saving this defense, which is great, but we are still have led the league in giving up plays of 20+ yards and are currently 19th in red zone defense. If we go through a spell of not getting any turnovers, suddenly the conversation will be "where did the defense go".

Haha yea ok

It's very clear i replied to you, on purpose, to say garbage time. If you have been around long enough you would know garbage time is not something i use.

Its the DQ effect, let teams have their will against us in the 4th after were blowing them away until the score becomes respectable and looks a lot closer than it should have. Opposing teams rack up huge passing yards with big gains next thing we know they drove the length of the football field in under 2 minutes....Philly and Carolina game were the same in the 4th. We had them down
and we let their offense start clicking, gaining huge yards and scoring easily...In the Carolina game, we allowed them to get within 8 pts with about 4 minutes left in game....they had the momentum. If it weren't for them using up all their time outs they might have tied the game...lucky for us our offense was very good. Had me worried for nothing. I dont care how many we are up, if we don't play till the end, its going to come back and bite us.....at the wrong time....AKA....Super Bowl with Atlanta or in the playoffs...
