“Mental Conditioning Coach”?!?!

grimace-clint-eastwood.gif

Funny, for years fans have been complaining the Cowboys teams have been mentally weak... call it trap games, looking ahead games, eating the cheese, or whatever you want to call it... in the end, it has been a result of not having the right mentality to stay focused and consistent. As soon as the team addresses the issue with professional help, fans ridicule it.

For those it helps it's probably a revelation, for those unaffected by this it certainly shouldn't hurt.. this is very interesting and surprisingly unsurprising

Lol…. I would have to say having a horrid defense for years affected them losing more than not having a “Mental Conditioning Coach”

Oh— and are you sure this Mental Conditioning Coach wasn’t here last year when we went 6-10?

Time for the old folks to come in here and make fun of people trying to take care of their mental health.

To be fair to us old folks, we didn't have everything handed to us or a sheltered upbringing, so most of us are mentally tougher than most of the younger generation. I grew up on shows like Good Times, The Jeffersons and All in the Family, so a mere word doesn't harm me/us like it does to some now. Not trying to say that having a "Mental Conditioning Coach" is stupid or a bad idea. Just trying to explain to you why some won't understand the need for this since they appear to have a great life with money that most of us can only dream of.

No way back when I was a kid would this type of behavior be allowed. These kids will probably need a Mental Conditioning Coach when they get old. Hell they need one now. I blame the parents, btw.

The mental health/conditioning piece was only part of this story. The devoting Fridays to physical recovery versus practice was what I found interesting. It says the Packers' conditioning coach convinced McCarthy of this. I'm curious what the basis for it is. I don't doubt the validity, just curious about the research/science behind it.

The stuff about not getting too high or low is also interesting. There's a lot of talk about teams getting "up" for games, and locker-room material, etc., and I tend to think all of that is mostly garbage. When you're too hyped up, you're as likely to overthrow the ball or overcommit to your gap, go for the big hit instead of the sound tackle, make those kinds of mistakes, as you are to play better. In a "do your job" league of professionals, staying focused on doing your job right play to play is way more important. At lower levels of play, that stuff might be a differentiator, but nobody's making it to the NFL without being able to get themselves up for game day.

Multiple friends that are NPs specializing in this field. The toll of last year alone led to a rapid increase of patients, not just parents but also kids. A good portion of their patients are professional athletes, dealing with both the lasting effects of injuries and current season issues. There is a stigma about mental health exists like it is something not to be talked about. Kudos that this team is finally addressing this issue.

I think some on here are mistaken on what the mental conditioning coach is about. It's about making sure your mind is focused...in the right place every game and every practice with a singular goal of making every single play your best play...it helps then to avoid distractions, staying even keel and not getting too high as a result of success, or getting too low as a result of failure. It's about trusting your teammates that they will do what they are supposed to do so that you can focus on what you need to to do. It's also about (I almost hate to say it...trusting the process). Mental conditioning is just as important as physical conditioning...yet I don't hear anyone making fun of the athletic trainer.
