Isn't the rule that the offense has to hike the ball in order for a penalty to occur?

I've seen so many players running off the field in a hurry before a play is in progress and have never seen the refs call a penalty.

Was that a correct call?

Just seemed like the refs were only watching out players today.

There’s two NFL rule books. One is specific when playing the Pats.

This is a good question, but I’ve seen the play stopped before as well. Just don’t remember the circumstance. There the idea that having more guys does not allow the other side to set correctly but what do I know?

Delay of game penalties have an extra second built in after the clock hits zero to give the official to look at the clock and then check the ball to see if it's being snapped. Here's an article that discusses it.

Yeah, the clock hits zero then the ref looks to see if the ball is snapped

the snap or kick to occur.

Was the Cowboys defensive player in formation? Because we know substitutions are allowed and I have seen QBs rush the snap to catch a 12th defensive player on the field.

I am not saying it was a bad call because I didn't see it. I really was only asking questions since the thread was started. I can look at it as I taped the game but haven't been able to yet.

I am not a ref basher. I have kids that play lacrosse and I laugh at parents that sit outside the field of play and are incredulous when a ref misses a call. I proceed to explain to them that these refs are standing out there in the middle of 20 kids; anyone out there will miss things that parents in the stands can see.

But I think the refs had a bad day today and the NFL didn’t help them.

Yeah, the speed of the game is just too fast for 6 or 7 refs to watch 11 different matchups.
