Film watchers - can you assess LVE play?

The howl has nothing to do with whether or not he's playing well.

But yeah, he sucks.

Better than Jaylon at least but then I can randomly go knock on someone's door and find 2 people inside that are better than Jaylon.
Honestly I think Gifford and Bernard would be better options ** this point.

Without being bias go watch film of this season of every play of both Leighton and Jaylon Smith. After that if you come away that Jaylon wasn't playing better than Leighton, much less than anyone in the league, than you haven't a clue what you are watching

Irv - with all due respect, trying to defend JS at this point indicates you don't have a clue what you are watching. The fans have voted, other outside observers have voted, the team has voted & soon the league will vote Jaylon off the island. LVE is not playing great but does he have meme's of just being a clown like Jayon? No.

Not everybody feels the same way. It's clear you and others that say Jaylon is the worst LB in the league haven't broken down the film.

By the way Jaylon was cut because of money not performance

He’s doing ok.

4th in team tackles.

plays 50 percent of the snaps.

On pace for 70+ tackles.

the #JaylonHate crowd is looking for a new target.
Appreciate the stats breakdown and, on paper, he does look "ok".

However, watching his play now vs his rookie year, he seems to have regressed. His movement to the ball seems more timid and less efficient. Is it the defensive scheme? His previous injuries?

Don't know, but DQ is noted for his more aggressive play. Let's just say, I expected him to rebound mightily this year and it hasn't happened.

Again, his play is "ok" but a far cry from his first round status and previous play.

Wow. That is quite the take. A team where things seem to be falling into place to make a run & they cut (according to you) a high performing player and in doing so pay him to play elsewhere this year. Sorry, but that doesn't hold water.

Yes, it's true that there was a future money issue .... but wouldn't have mattered if he had been playing at a level that justified it. It was all about lack of performance.

Show me where i said a high performing player? Don't make up things that i didn't say and try to argue that point.

I have said many times that Jaylon is an average player at this point in his career which is far from trash or worst in the league like some silly folks say on here.

Also my comment was saying that Jaylon, outside of the giants game, has played better than Leighton. That's a fact and anybody saying otherwise has a bias towards Jaylon and not going off what the film shows us.

Edit....... Jaylon had a injury guarantee in his contract that he refused to remove. It was just as much as a future move than anything. Couldn't risk him getting injured

He has one less solo tackle than Micah.

It's not like he's been terrible.

Most of his tackles are solo.

Huh? Are you saying Jaylon was playing better than LVE and other LBs in the NFL?

I don’t disagree but we aren’t on the hook for 9m if LVE gets injured.

hesitant when making tackles

takes poor angles in persuit

never stops a ball carrier in their tracks they seem to gain 1 or 2 extra yards on contact

Swing passes 1 on 1 in space hes not reliable to make that tackle either

It's obvious the grading curve is different on this board, but film don't lie. Not sure the continued obsessions about Jaylon (he'll get blamed anyway, if this team goes south).

LVE has played decent all year and I’ve watched him close to determine if he needs to be resigned. He did miss an open field tackle on a swing pass to a rb that looked really bad against the Giants. But other than that he played well. I’ve seen him attack the line and fill his gap consistently. At times he does get engulfed by linemen and cannot disengage. That is probably his biggest weakness. Subpar DT play has had a lot to do with it especially last year. Offensive lineman should not be consistently getting to the next level to hit the LBs. A nose guard that is disruptive would help that situation.

All and all it’s a tough call right now whether to resign LVE. I think he can be a great linebacker in the right system, but this may not be it. I’m very intrigued to see what Jabril Cox can bring to the table. I like the idea of playing big safeties as linebackers as well.

Stats, but splash plays.

Leighton has 8 splash plays in 176 snaps. Or 1 per 22 snaps.
Parsons has 15 splash plays in 296 snaps. Or 1 per 20 snaps.

Unfortunately, Neal isn't on the chart maybe due to games missed/cutoff.

Other players for reference:

Diggs has 21 splash plays in 327 snaps. 1 per 16
Kearse has 11 splash plays in 328 snaps. 1 per 30
Osa Odiggy has 10 splash plays in 219 snaps. 1 per 22
Gregory has 12 splash plays in 177 snaps. 1 per 15
Brown has 10 in 352 snaps. 1 per 35

He's not too far off from other players in terms of making "good" plays. Whether it be a sack, stop for no gain, hurry etc.

@vlad I don't think he is a fit for the system the Cowboys are running on defense this year. Quinn's defense wants fast LBs who can cover. Looks like Quinn is taking a LB or two off the field and replacing with one or two safeties or a safety and light DE.
LVE knows his responsibility on every play and seems to miss few tackles.
His ceiling looks to be solid but nothing spectacular in this system.

I doubt the Cowboys want to re-sign him and I highly doubt he wants to come back. He will be leaving in FA.
Glad he wasn’t a 1st rounder.
