Love how they keep "resetting" it by picking up the receiver and putting it back down.

Some offices had locks on their rotary phones to prevent them being used outside of office hours, but you did not actually need to use the rotary dial.

A rotary dial would dial a phone by sending quick pulses (power on/off) equal to the number being dialed. So 1 would be 1 quick pulse, 5 would be 5 quick pulses, 0 would be 10 quick pulses, etc.

So all you had to do to emulate this was press the hang-up switches in rapid succession to simulate the number of pulses making sure to pause slightly between numbers.
