I rather keep cooper as gallup will cost about as much in todays market and we can easily restructure cooper's contract...he is still relatively young....

He will get 12 mil
I wait and see if a WR falls to me in the draft
Let Gallup walk, sign Wilson and if a guy falls to me I move on from Cooper
But moving on from players is not free
We are already over the cap and cutting Cooper guarantees to have to restructure Dak and others because it cost 6 mil
I really don’t want to restructure Smith or Zeke myself

If CeeDee keeps improving and still leads all WRs in yards by the end of this season, he will prove he's our new #1 WR. This would be bad for Cooper, since he and his overpaid contract suddenly can become expendable and put on the cutting block if Gallup agrees to stay for a much cheaper contract (say around $10 mil/year). That's a savings of over $10 million/year for the Cowboys which could be used to keep at least 2 other veterans (say someone like Schultz and LVE). The same story goes for D-Law and his overpaid contract. Gregory can have the franchise tag placed on him if he and the Cowboys don't come to a contract extension agreement.

Its not about which is better. Obviously you would like to keep all 3. But would this defense be better served resigning Gregory and signing a stud DT in FA with the money we pay Cooper?

There is no chance that Gallup costs us 22 million.

No doubt Cooper forces teams to pay much more attention to him than Gallup does
Rarely is Gallup double teamed and without cooper, Lamb will be getting double teams more often
Cooper brings more than Gallup and I really like Gallup but he’s played himself into a big payday and he’s not getting it here

Im not worried about Lamb and Gallup getting open without Cooper. They need to account for our running game first and then we have our two TE's. Cooper is a 22 million dollar luxury at this point that we dont need.

No I say we resign Gallup. Dont forget we can back load Gallups contract so the first year or two wont be that bad. Be we probably save at least 7 million per year with Gallup. That takes care of Shultz all by itself no doubt.

I understand why some fans are reluctant to cut ties with Cooper. Heck, we all like him and wish we could keep him, but he is too expensive to keep after this season. There is no way Cooper will agree to a huge pay cut in order to stay, so he automatically becomes expendable. The same goes for D-Law.

It's business. Cowboys have no room for next year's cap, so they will have to make some tough cuts after this season in order to make room to keep just as good players who are willing to stay for cheaper pay. It's all about business and being forced to work within the salary cap while still being able to maintain a playoff capable team.

Gallup has one 1000 yard year
You do realize cutting players like Dlaw or Cooper isn’t free
Sure you save that annual pay less who ever you sign to replace him, but there is an upfront cost and we are already over the cap next year with only 43 players signed. Cutting players that cost you more cap space means more players you have to restructure and then you push out money owed them
If we restructure Dak which is very likely we push 20 mil out past the time his contract expires
So you have to sign him again for whatever that costs plus the 20 mil, or let him walk with 20 mil in dead cap

Cooper’s base salary is $20M which could easily be restructured and buy the team a lot of cap space. The contract was set up that way. Could easily get $15M in cap relief by restructuring Cooper. Too easy.
