With a just-signed free agent kicker, how close is field goal range?

I've never seen anything of this guy, so I wonder. Normally if the field goal is of about 55 yards or less, it's considered field goal range, though somewhat longer isn't impossible. However, not all kickers are the same. Have they been able to determine approximately from what distance this kicker is reliable?

His longest field goal n the CFL was 56 yards

HIs distance isn't beyond the low 50's.

What he is, and the Cowboys fans will appreciate this, is not a heart attack waiting to happen between the 30's and 40's.

He is way more consistent. The majority of his misses occurs at the longer distances which is what fans should expect. He makes his chip shots.

Kind of a boring kicker, but I think we will appreciate that.

So basically, get him to about 45 - 50 yards or closer and he's likely good?

You can never truly trust a kicker, so every FG at any yardage is a roll of the dice.

In their primes, I considered Nick Folk and Dan Bailey to be pretty much automatic. Legatron is Maybe Maher 2.0, will probably make it from 50+ but anything else is dicey.

who care seriously hopefully we dont even feel like using him over 50 unless its game tying or winning kick late..prefer to be aggressive and go for tds and 1st downs over fgs and so far that Mikes MO..

It does make choices tougher to have an unproven kicker. I miss the days of having Dan Bailey in his prime. With this ex-CFL guy, I don't know that we attempt a 55 yarder. (Maybe we do.) The other options are to go for it or to pooch punt and try to pin them within their own 5 yard-line (not easy to do).

I don’t think it changes much of anything with our current HC. McCarthy has a penchant of going for it on 4th down, exp when the FG distance is longer and 1st down yardage is short. And personally, I don’t have a problem with that.

That said, if a FG is necessary.. ideally you want the new kicker’s opportunities to be at the 40yd or less.. if it’s an “end-of-half” or “game” situation.. well, you don’t have much of a choice, you’ll just have to put your trust in the kicker like any other kicker.

its the same as any other positions there are like 5 elite types and then a 2nd tier, regardless of what you think of Greg he was élite at one time and now is on top of tier 2..so hes not money but if you think about his misses they were early in games but his big makes all in clutch times..hes made the big ones we needed late..

you aren't finding elite kicker on trees or looking for jobs..same as most positions..

True. I do think when Zuerlein is better, he'll be back, especially if this replacement kicker struggles. If the replacement guy totally nails it, then they have a tougher decision.

I'm surprised that he's not the 'starting' kicker somewhere. He seemed steady when he was on the team before and he had a solid career in the CFL.

I don’t know. But Big Mac will know the answer to that by Sunday at kickoff.

Yes, I'll take a kicker that makes all kicks from 45 yards or less over one that has great range but is inconsistent even on the sub 40 yard kicks.
