Quick question.. Not that hip on the technique we used before and what’s happening now. Did we used to zone block or man block. I remember one of JG’s last years with us he let our old O-Line coach go to the bengals and picked up there O-Line coach that happened to be a friend of his. He was admitting to changing there hand and foot techniques and we started playing bad resulting in his firing and Colombo taking over.

Is this O-Line coach changing things that have slowly developed into us playing worse or different that this O-Line is trying to slowly change to. The first 7 games or so we played way better in the run. I know Tyron being out hurts and Elliot being hurt chances things. But we got nothing going on. Is the opposing defenses changing the way they are attacking the run. Just wondering if this coach is changing something.

IMO, you are overthinking this. Injuries to the O-line and RBs is what happened, not the coaching, not the blocking scheme,

I just wondered because a lot of you around here understand more about the blocking techniques used more than I do. What’s his noodle came in and decided to change footwork and hand techniques and slowly made a mess. I guess everyone is getting healthier now except Tyron who got rolled up on. I see Pollard trying to make a go at it. And Elliot feeling better.

Columbo used more of a power, man blocking scheme, where players like Collins excelled. Now we are back running more of a zone blocking scheme, in which players need to hit moving targets, which McGovern has really struggled with.

Primarily they have used zone. They switched to man in 2015 because that was what McFadden preferred and after underwear boy failed. McFadden was then inactive for much of the following season because Zeke’s preference is zone!

I heard when they were at there peak they could go either way and were good. Sometimes blocking zone on some pass plays and line up man for run plays and get to the next level. Or I may have that backwards. Lol.

Wonder if we should change it up. Guess Williams would maybe struggle. Or maybe why McGovern is used as FB. Lol.

Keep in mind everyone is so concerned about the running game but the final results of the WFT game were 35 carries for 122 yards and a win. Those aren't terrible numbers and you're right about Pollard and Zeke, they will have better games.

Hoping they all get healthy at the right time. Come out controlling the trenches on both sides..

I think they’ve gone with the RBs preference for the most part. Murray and Zeke preferred zone, McFadden preferred man. Depending on what Philben can coach, moving Collins inside to gaurd and giving Pollard more carries using more man may have been an option before his foot injury.

McGovern is more the classic straight ahead G. Better for a power blocking scheme. Drives and anchors well, doesn't move that well. Maybe his time at FB will help him improve on that.

As much as people get outraged when Williams shows a lack of that straightline power, he's just better as a pass blocker and blocking in space.

On paper we could have a dominant oline. Smith healthy. Collins back to 2019 form. Williams playing well at LG.

Biadasz would still be a weakness, but he's technically competent.

Philbin was big Mikes OC at Green Bay.

MColombo (who played RT in the NFL and actually knows something about blocking) was fired so Philbin would have a job, since Jerry wouldn’t get rid of the kid currently calling plays.

btw, big Mike still has a play sheet during games.

Biadasz was a rimington trophy winner.

we were lucky to draft him in the 4th.

the Biadasz hate on here is ridiculous.

Already know all that.

Yeah when you have 3 HOF level players in their athletic primes, it makes it easier on the coaching.

Exactly. That guy JG brought in from the bengals, all he had to do was not touch anything and let the assistant Colombo run things. Set back and enjoy. But he wanted to change there footwork. Cost him his job..

No team does only one or the other scheme. It depends on the play and/or defensive alignment.
