I was pushing for Payton back then to replace Parcells before Payton even left for the Saints job and when most people had no clue about him.Who wouldn’t love to see SP here? But in my own mind I keep coming back to this question: Why would he agree to come to Dallas if the Jones circus is allowed to spin “business as usual”.
When Payton was here with Parcells nearly two decades ago, Jerry wasn’t “in the weeds” as much as he is today because he was working on the “stayjum” and gave Parcells the latitude no HC has had since.
In fact, I would love to be convinced that a “real” NFL HC would be interested in this job despite the intrusion of the Jones’. I find it hard to believe that but maybe I could be convinced.
One more reason why keeping Garrett for a decade continues to sting this organization. Sadly, some bad ideas have long term ramifications, lol.I was pushing for Payton back then to replace Parcells before Payton even left for the Saints job and before most people had no clue about him.
Payton and Romo together would have been a great match (both played at Eastern Illinois) and I think Payton could help Dak quite a bit as well.
The problem has always been timing with Jerry and Payton. When Payton really wanted to come to Dallas was when his kids were there (with his ex-wife), but the Cowboys had Garrett. In between Garrett contracts, Payton got contract extensions and the bad timing continued.
I think Payton realizes that without Brees, unless he lands another great quarterback the odds are against him leading the Saints to the Super Bowl and he also has a huge legacy in New Orleans, so I will not be surprised if he retires for good if he leaves the Saints.

Payton was the reason Dallas signed Romo, so I didn't blame Payton for wanting him in New Orleans. It worked out great for Payton, but it would have been great seeing what Payton and Romo could have done in Dallas.Remember he tried to trade for Romo when he got to NO’s (all before Romo was Romo). This was before Bree’s failed his physical in Miami and than he landed in his lap.

That is what I was thinking, but that possibility would become a regular headline every week if Payton refused to sign any extensions with the Saints as we would see article after article speculating, "Is McCarthy a lame duck head coach until Payton gets the job next season?".Timing would work out next year, potentially, if Mike only gets one more kick at the can
