1. What is going to happen with Sean Payton?
Back on Jan. 7, we wrote this column about what Payton should do. Interestingly enough, our harmless suggestions there sound a whole lot like what some NFL insiders have reported Payton might actually do this week. He has still not committed to a return. Even the owner, Gayle Benson, said at an event on Monday that she wasn’t sure what Payton’s eventual decision might be. There is an aggressive television market out there right now. It would be the perfect landing spot for a coach who could step away for a year and allow the chess pieces to fall into place. In the meantime, he could make beaucoup money, travel with a television crew all over the country with access to every facility in football and give the right job an opportunity to present itself while the Saints roster rebuilds from the stress of a decades-long stretch of relevance.

Who wouldn’t love to see SP here? But in my own mind I keep coming back to this question: Why would he agree to come to Dallas if the Jones circus is allowed to spin “business as usual”.

When Payton was here with Parcells nearly two decades ago, Jerry wasn’t “in the weeds” as much as he is today because he was working on the “stayjum” and gave Parcells the latitude no HC has had since.

In fact, I would love to be convinced that a “real” NFL HC would be interested in this job despite the intrusion of the Jones’. I find it hard to believe that but maybe I could be convinced.

If anyone is right it’s Glazer. Nice dream but it isn’t happening. I’m still concerned on what we’re going to do offensively next season.

I was pushing for Payton back then to replace Parcells before Payton even left for the Saints job and when most people had no clue about him.

Payton and Romo together would have been a great match (both played at Eastern Illinois) and I think Payton could help Dak quite a bit as well.

The problem has always been timing with Jerry and Payton. When Payton really wanted to come to Dallas was when his kids were there (with his ex-wife), but the Cowboys had Garrett. In between Garrett contracts, Payton got contract extensions and the bad timing continued.

I think Payton realizes that without Brees, unless he lands another great quarterback the odds are against him leading the Saints to the Super Bowl and he also has a huge legacy in New Orleans, so I will not be surprised if he retires for good if he leaves the Saints.

One more reason why keeping Garrett for a decade continues to sting this organization. Sadly, some bad ideas have long term ramifications, lol.

I would love to have him, but not if he comes here with the same energy that Jimmy had when he went to Miami....it has to be with the same energy he had when starting off in NO....and I'm not sure that is possible.

Remember he tried to trade for Romo when he got to NO’s (all before Romo was Romo). This was before Bree’s failed his physical in Miami and than he landed in his lap.

Payton was the reason Dallas signed Romo, so I didn't blame Payton for wanting him in New Orleans. It worked out great for Payton, but it would have been great seeing what Payton and Romo could have done in Dallas.

Jerry is not holding MM in vain this year just to fire him for Payton. If DAL doesn't make it to the NFC championship game in 2022, MM is fired and here comes Seany P.

Yes sir. And I was so envious of what might have been with Payton and him. Remember we’ve been dreaming about Payton here for a decade. Once to help Romo and now to help Dak. It’s funny that the same rumors about Sean are reappearing all these years later! Lol

Think Cleveland ever thinks why did they let Belichek leave? Haha

This is the very same question that I asked. Would Sean Payton really want to come back and work underneath Jerry Jones. I would be shocked if he actually took the Cowboys job at this point.

Timing would work out next year, potentially, if Mike only gets one more kick at the can

He doesn't have a QB.

I'm not sure of Rodgers would go there or if Seattle would trade Wilson within the conference.

If they can't get one I'd be out of there quickly and keep my stock high.

Performing miracles to win 8-9 games isn't going to be easy to repeat.

That is what I was thinking, but that possibility would become a regular headline every week if Payton refused to sign any extensions with the Saints as we would see article after article speculating, "Is McCarthy a lame duck head coach until Payton gets the job next season?".
