If he sits out a year and MM does MM things, Dallas would be the obvious choice next season.

1 more season of Dak before out year on contract so he can see what he has to work with or start over.

Zeke out year on deal

Tank out year if not restructured/released this year

Cap flexibility possible
Yep. This is great compromise for Jerry and Stephen. Stephen gets his guy MM to have another shot. Jerry has his coveted star lined up if it doesn’t work out

I think he goes to TV and I think he stays there. I would be shocked if he coaches again.

Why just waste another year to hold out hopes of Payton wanting to coach again? Because bringing back Fat Mike is wasting another year which will end in the same result . Do what it takes now, even if it means giving the saints compensation

im pretty sure all the chips are in Payton’s hands. If he wanted to coach now he could come here and coach the cowboys now. I think Jerry would get rid of mm in a second. Sean probably just needs time off, is gonna paid really great in the meantime by tv and can’t hurt his stock by not coaching now.

he may also feel like if he’s gonna step down from the Saints it’s not right to just go directly to another team but I can assure you this isn’t Jerry’s lack of interest

Sean going to get that easy tv money. Brees and Payton retire back-to-back years Saints fans probably shook right now.

Looks like Dallas gonna have the same offensive coaches.

I could see Moore in New Orleans.

Dallas would have to part ways with coach Mike McCarthy, who is just beginning his third season (with owner Jerry Jones upset with how Year 2 ended.)

Dallas would have to negotiate with Payton to keep him from taking a TV job.

Dallas would have to - we assume - create compensation for the Saints, who still have Payton under contract for a number of years.

Really, one question is: Is Payton "retiring'' (as some media outlets phrase it) or "stepping back'' (which can be another thing entirely)?

Does this mean he's free or would boys still need to compensate Saints?

NO would have to release him from his contract. Right now I think he is doing it to take a break from coaching so I don't think he is looking at jumping back to the sidelines right away. He may a year from now who knows but right now I don't see him coming to Dallas.

Just heard on the Fan that a person DM’d the host that said he knows Sean from the movie coming out with Kevin James acting as Payton. Said that Sean was going to talk Benson and say he wants to go to the Cowboys with limited compensation, meaning like a 3rd round pick, or he’s going to TNF and you won’t get anything in return.

Take it for what it’s worth but it was interesting. The guy seemed to know a lot about the situation. I think it’s his future son in law or something to that matter.

I dont think NFL coaches are the same as players when they retire. Team do not own his rights, and unlike players are not part of the cap.

Payton simply walked away from contract, and team does not need to pay him anymore. He's an employee. I dont think they are covered in the NFLPA agreement.

If a player retires their cap number still counts against the cap at a discount. Number does not fall off the books. Look at the Fredrick situation.

For a coach I do not think this matters. Its like any other employee. You retire or quit you get nothing and team doesnt own your rights.

Smart.

Why watch his stock drop while he has no QB?

He will be the center of every rumor 11 months from now and have his choice of options.

I thought he did a pretty good job last season given the fact he had Hill and Siemian and still finished 9-8 with a shot heading into last weekend of the season. Frankly I thought the Saints would do much worse without Brees

IT will be informative the way he does it. Going to TV would be to me a sign he might be thinking about coaching again. If he flat out walks away from everything he might indeed be really retiring.
