Like it or not need will be a big factor

At this point it’s almost impossible to know who goes and who stays. Any outside additions will be on the cheap. Whether we like it or not need is going to be a big consideration. Last year they determined need was at CB and wanted either or Horn or Surtain. They ended up “settling” for Parsons. So forget about who you want and what the mocks say. Who do you really think this team is going to take with their 1 st 2 picks ? This is what I think:

1. Jermaine Johnson II- I think he will be the highest graded player available at a position of need. Linderbaum and Green are both gone and they “settle” for the guy that replaces Lawrence.

2. Sean Rhyan-After missing out on Linderbaum and Green, they know they have to replace the LG position and Ryan is their guy. I think Ryan is a plug in and play guy and an upgrade from Williams.

We already drafted Sean Ryan in 2004.

As an aside, we really should look into Sean Rhyan from UCLA.

Johnson 98-99% sure will be out of our range. He’s going to go top 20 as of today.

i agree ,JJ likely gone before Green and Linderbaum.I think a lot of pass rushers may go before 24 which may help drop someone like Green to us.

Wait til Jerry decides we "need" a WR.

Depending how the board falls, how we attack free agency, it’s definitely possible.

Williams, Olave etc will be there

Cowboys draft off need more times than not and take BPA when the player(s) they want get snatched before they could draft them.

2013, scouts wanted Floyd, Marnelli didn't want him. Rumor was trade back for Patterson, but Vikings trade up for him, then they take a "reach" in Frederick

McClay era
2014, all of our top wants were taken in Donald, Barr and Shazier. Settled on Martin, who while wasn't a huge need but we needed a RG. 2nd round trade up for DE(need)
2015 we needed secondary help bad. Get Jones. Gregory in the 2nd was a mix of boom/bust BPA and need.
2016 we needed a homerun hit at RB for one last hurrah with Romo. Take Zeke. Take a flyer on Smith in 2nd(luxury)
2017 we needed a passrusher, they decide on a DE, but take length over potential. Awuzie was a need(along with Lewis) after the secondary "purge"
2018 we needed a linebacker, they set their targets on LVE early. Take Williams in the 2nd for LG
2019 traded for a WR. Needed a DT so took Hill.
2020 while wasn't a pressing need, they took BPA at the time in CDL over a edge or corner. Corner was high on list in 2020 so they took Diggs.
2021 they settled for BPA after their "need" at corner was taken before their pick. 2nd rounder was a corner, which was a need.

Now, most teams will pick for need. You have to at times due to FA, cutting big contracts, surprise retirements or trying to find the next QB for the team.

So, I don't see it as a terrible thing to be drafting for need, just as long as there's no reaching

First, your entire post was void of truth.

Second, if you're not reaching you're not drafting for need. Drafting for need means selecting players who fill an immediate need over higher ranked players on your board.

Not many fans understand the draft so I've learned it's pointless to really discuss it much.

I think there is enough areas of need, concern or that could be addressed that you should be able to get the BPA in most cases and still address what this team needs.

If the BPA in the first three rounds happen to be OG, OC, OT, WR, LB, DT, DE, S and even CB....it would still be an area of concern and surely there will be some BPA's available in those positions.

I disagree on saying reaching always equals need.

If a team has a 3rd round grade on a DT but takes him early in the 2nd over guys with 2nd round grades that could be considered a reach.
If a team has 2nd round grades on a DT and a safety, and they have the safety ranked a little higher than the DT but take the DT instead due to their roster make up that's drafting for need and not exactly a reach.

Need will be a factor but it looks like we have so many there should not be a need to stray from the board.

C, OG, TE, WR, DE, DT, LB, S maybe even OT

C - I highly doubt happen unless Linderbaum falls. Biadasz and we drafted Farniok last season.

OG - Is a must. With Williams leaving, we need to fill the position. McGovern was crud at LG.

TE - Really depends on what they do with Schultz. I could see them extending Schultz over Gregory as he is more of a safety blanket for Dak.

DE - Another one that really depends on 94. Could be a massive hole or nothing at all

DT - DT is like C to me. If the right guy isn't there, they will not address it. Osa, Gallimore, Hill and Bohanna all remain under contract. You can also get Watkins / Urban back for $1-$2 million a year and they are Pro Quinn guys.

LB - Is a must. I really love 11 and 14. I honestly think they bring back LVE on a team friendly deal. He isn't going to break the bank.

S - Would love a young guy like Brisker. But I see us going with a later round pick. Likely bringing back Kearse and Hooker and play opposite of Wilson.

OT - Smith, Collins, Steele, Ball. Another one to me, that unless a guy like Penning falls right into your lap, you aren't addressing it.

These aren't what I would want the team to do. It's more of the route I expect them to go. They have needs. But I don't see them taking certain players to kick bottom of the roster guys off just yet (Basham, Farniok, Ball etc)

It's starting to look like Cooper is likely gone and cutting DLaw only saves $6 million so he may stay and it sounds like they're trying to keep Gregory. If that's the case WR is very imoprtant and they need to look at guys like Burks, Wilson, and Olave with the latter being the most likely to be there based on pre combine rankings. He's the best rout runner and is also a deep threat. Our offense was terrible last year when Cooper was out and we may also lose Gallup.

If they cut Cooper or DLaw…sigh.

The bolded is simply not true, Risen. Drafting for need is looking at what you need to get better and seeing if there is a player who can address that need.

What you are saying is purely reaching.

If we draft more CB's and WR's, we are not getting better.

Depends on what we do with Cooper and what we do in FA.

We could let Cooper go, we got to see if we will bring back Gallup and/or Wilson.

Also if a Roger Mcreary type DB falls to you in day 2 or 3...and they are clearly heads and tails above a DT. Don't start reaching. I know Risen likes to play the game like he hates DBs but no need to reach for a 6th round grade pass rusher if you have a 2nd round grade on a DB.
