It is officially time for exciting offseason conversation!

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/...-advocate-for-banning-turf-field-in-stadiums/

“There's a lot of support for natural grass fields, but what is the "Flip The Turf" campaign? Half of the league's teams play on artificial turf, which is why players are pushing for change. There are statistics in the campaign to back up why fields should switch from turf to grass.

In the petition, turf fields have:

  • 28% more non-contact lower body injuries.
  • 32% more non-contact knee injuries and 69% more non-contact foot and ankle injuries occurred on turf.
  • Turf can get up to 60 degrees hotter than natural grass, increasing the rate at which toxic gases are released and ingested”

This is a cute idea but it will never fly because for every injury blamed on turf there are just as many blamed on crappy grass especially late in the season as the weather send the grass into hibernation and you end up playing on dirt, mud, or frozen dirt. I don't think it's all that much safer.. but I don't play on it. If the players think their bodies would fare better on grass then that's good enough for me..

I wonder if different cleats/shoes should be chosen or mandated. Seems to me a lot of the injuries are from a foot sticking "too well" to turf and the leg or body above getting stressed because of that. Changing the turf to less sticky grass would be one solution, but couldn't you also lessen the grip by changing the size/depth of the cleats? The issue is, that would sacrifice the amount of traction that players also want.

wouldn't like you just not pay to watch if a business made decisions about their product you didn't like?

There's a reason why the League prefers these newer turfs over grass, they're actually safer, and some of these stadiums are Domed where you can't grow grass or they're multipurpose stadiums, so you can have a concert on thursday night, high school football Friday, a college game on Saturday and then an NFL game on Sunday, now how do you think that grass fields would be on Sunday for NFL players safety, do you not remember the Raiders game played on a baseball diamond in Oakland or counting for the winter games when these fields are frozen solid as a rock or the dirt is painted green as Green bay three weeks ago or a torrential rain playing on slop field that doesn't drain....

yup than i ban all outdoor venues as rain makes it slippery to throw and catch, ice makes it hard, and all of it effects the game injuries aside lets talk reality. ive seen people step off curbs walking and tear an acl..chit happens.

What kind of logic is there to grass in domed stadiums, how would that work again??

you are aware it’s 2022 right? assuming you really are unaware that grass can be grown and maintained in a dome, what does any of that have to do with fans weighing in on player safety concerns, and how does grass or turf affect your viewing experience?

Grass is always better...I think every year when they do the player poll of ranking the playing surfaces, even the worst stadiums with grass rank higher than any turf. The technology for turf still hasn't caught up to where it is a suitable replacement for grass and maybe it never will be. But the convenience is just better for NFL teams, especially the places like Jerry World and LA where they plan to use those stadiums for more than just football

"I don't think"... erm, there are actual statistics on how turf is less safer than natural grass.
