The best way to trade a player is to let everyone know he will get released if no deal can be made.

it’s not like they’re letting the cat out of the bag. The trade gives a team the rights, unless they want to take a chance competing against other teams if he becomes a FA.

First Cooper, then Lawrence, then Zeke, and maybe then the guy they paid a 160 m to. All overpaid and overrated at this point.
I think what you are trying to get at is this: how many recent big contract extensions have actually paid off?

The best way to assure of getting a player is to trade for them. If Cooper is released he’ll be up for grabs and can pick where he goes.

Yep and a team like the Jags with plenty of cap space and a young QB would certainly cover a precise route runner like Amari.

Colts will give a 3rd for him. They don't have a 1st or 2nd rounder and Amari's guaranteed money is gone. They trade a 3rd and then restructure his deal. Add a fake year with same 20 million per year salary but with 20 million in guaranteed money split over the first 2 years 10 per year. Amari would do that because he gets guaranteed money again and the Colts could push back his base salary for those two years making the cap hit more like 15 million over two years and no more guarantees after 2 years so they can get out of the contract if needed.

100 Pound heads in charge...

"We are going to release Cooper if we can't trade him."

Pretty sure they are FAILING at their jobs!

NFL GMs are not stupid. Every single NFL GM could look at the cap situation for the Cowboys and realize that they needed to do something with Cooper to get under the cap and considering that they had not restructured the deal the only option was to cut him or trade him and if he is getting cut why give up anything? This would be the scenario even if nothing was being leaked because it is the obvious scenario and every GM recognized it even without it being leaked.

Why would the Colts give up a 3rd round pick to get a player who they could get for 15-16m when he would not even be the top WR in the class? If the Colts want a top WR there are plenty of options on the same level that will not cost 20m.

They can't get a top receiver in this year's class they don't have a pick in the first two rounds and the best receivers like Adams and Godwin will get more than 20 Million. If they trade for Cooper they won't have to outbid other teams and because he has no guaranteed money on his contract they can add some and restructure to make it cheaper on this years cap hit

The Eagles will get a 1st round pick for their backup punter. Meanwhile in Dallas, the Cowboys get nothing for their #1 Wr.

We are talking about trading for a player that comes from a team that hasn't been successful at anything.

Why cant they sign one of the good free agents exactly? Why couldnt they sign Cooper after being cut? Why give up a 3rd to pay more money then you would have to otherwise? Any team that offers 17m should easily get him so why trade a high pick instead especially when Godwin is also going to be cheaper with the same production?
