It seems to pretty much confirm that Cooper is gone as well. There is no way they would take away that many receptions from their wonderboy Dak, so they thought they had to bring back at least one of the two. Schultz was cheaper, so presto.
Forgone conclusion.

He has been gone probably since midseason. This year was either to restructure him or cut him. His performance does not warrant a restructure.

We will see what happens when D isn’t focused on everybody else.Non blocking TE’s who aren’t dynamic don’t deserve top 5 money.

We will see. His blocking has to improve but you can find cheap blocking TE find TE who put up numbers are a bit harder to come by/

Underrated: Dalton Schultz
2021 team: Cowboys | Age entering 2022 season: 26

Schultz is arguably the best tight end available in free agency, as he's coming off a season in which he was the sixth-highest-graded and third-most-valuable tight end in the NFL. Schultz is good at finding soft spots in zone, doesn't have an extensive injury history, adds value after the catch, wins at the catch point and holds his own in the run game. He ranked sixth or higher at the position last year in drop rate (3.4%), contested catch rate (63.2%, 12/19) and broken tackles after the catch (13). If Dallas is forced to let him walk, a team like Tennessee makes a lot of sense as a landing spot.

I know, no matter what Dallas does MOST will complain. They complain all season about Cooper then we are about to release him and now he is irreplaceable. Had Jones restructured his deal they would be moaning about that as well. I would love to see an all around TE but fact is those guys are hard to come by, college ranks are producing TE who are a lot more involved in the pass game than the run game.
fixed lol^

Last year!
We need to build upon Micah put all resources into The defense . . . At this point its the Cowboys only chance . . . because no matter how many resources are thrown at the offense . . they cant carry the team

Another mistake. No one was a bigger proponent of Schultz when he was draft eligible than I was, and I think he's a good player. But, he's good enough to let go and not concern yourself too much over losing. At an 11M per season salary? Huge mistake, but not surprising given the front office.
It's a 1 year thing - not exactly a huge commitment. And if they come to terms on a longer term deal it will be at terms that will have less of an annual cap impact than the one year franchise tag for 2022

He is replaceable . . . and the Cowboys do not need to allocate 10 million to the TE position this year. . . there are other pressing needs.

10 million is half of Coopers salary . . . why dump Cooper? . . to pay Shultz?. . . really?

The fact is Schultz is a good receiver and if they are going to remain a passing team, 61%, they can't let Cooper, Gallup, Wilson and Schultz walk.

Schultz became Prescott's Witten and they need to keep the receiving corps together as much as they can for the continuity and familiarity.

And for insurance purposes, Schultz is a good deal. I have more confidence in him to be a very good receiving TE more than Lamb to be a #1WR. They need to keep Gallup as well and a lot won't like that but the QB will. And that's what this is all about.

It's stunning how limited the Jones Boys are with roster mgt. They seemingly have no interest in actively managing personnel and looking for better player solutions to fill the lines of their depth chart.

Does Schultz really look like a franchise player? He is a hybrid TE. He can't block and is not very good in contested coverage.

Would rather they kicked the tires on Rudolf or some othe FA than break the bank for this guy.

They probably wont allocate $10 million to it. They will probably end up signing him to a longer deal with less of an annual impact.

As for being replaceable, maybe, but easily replaceable … ? He was 4th among TE's in TD's and 6th in yardage. That's not something you can get from just any warm body.

Additionally, it looks like we will probably release Cooper, so the team may have felt it didn't want to lose another quality receiver.

Of course, if dropping Schultz meant getting Aaron Donald … lol
