You guys whining about the fifth round pick and moving down in the sixth don’t get it at all. You are comparing apples and oranges. Dallas was never going to keep him, never going to pay him 20 million. They would have restructured him last year. They gave him what he wanted to try and win while also seeing whether Ceedee would look like a #1. They structured it into a 2 year contract with no further guaranteed money.

Most teams in this position get zip for a player when other teams know he will be released. Most players, yes even great ones, end up released to free agency in this situation. The Browns have less room than teams like Washington and didn’t want a bidding war after he was released. Read some reports. We are getting a higher grade for this trade than the Browns because we did better than most teams have ever done in this situation.

See it comes to posts like this to help me see a different perspective.

A 5th round pick for a trade that didn't have to happen.

Since Dallas squandered their chance to exploit his talent by not passing to him, we are where we are. Of course... it would have been so much better had Dallas thrown to him deliberately, intentionally and showed his greatness to overtake games when winning called for it. A restructure would have been a possibility if he felt essential in Dallas. He said that he enjoyed the team, so much better than his previous experience with the Raiders. It could have happened, if Dak (whom I'm glad we have) threw to him more.

20+ million relief for a part timer. They can replace 865 yards.

But I get this is a lot for some fans to stomach.
Just seems like another one igmf the Jones stupid decisions, giving up a #1 to get Coop and not having the extension worked out at the time of the trade. So then you give him 100 million contract and a year into it trade him away for a 5th? Alot of fans will say it's cap relief but it was dumb and dumber that put the team there in the first place.

For all those blaming the FO for telegraphing the move from Cooper . . . has it not occurred to anyone that maybe it was Coops agent that leaked this after the unsuccessful restructure of the contract?

Cooper declined. We can point the finger everywhere else, or we can accept that we just dumped a 20+ million contract from a part timer.
If we kept him longer, fans would piss & moan that we're overpaying.

I was never a Cooper fan so don't care if he's gone but it just seems like another example in a long line of bad team management decisions

We should've found a way to trade zeke. Once he got massive contract he has been almost trash. In my opinion Pollard is the better back or it maybe because he wants it more.

His performance wasn’t the only reason he was traded. This team has serious salary cap issues. They had a decision to make. Keep Cooper and possibly rework his deal or trade him if possible. I agree with trading him because I think he can be replaced in the draft and we could use his savings elsewhere. Where they use the money that’s a whole other story. As much as I think he is overrated, if this team were not in such a salary cap bind I think he would probably still be here.

right but 1) losing talented players to make up for your own mistakes is the problem in of itself and 2) you just answered your own question.....they won’t go out and use that money to bring in talent. It’ll be 4 quarters for a dollar moves or even worse 10 dimes to equal a dollar.

this team was 12-5. Yes, they lost to the better teams in the league but regardless they shouldn’t be taking steps backwards and losing talent. I’ve seen them make moves like they were a piece away when we were 8-8, 9-7 etc and now they have win 12 games and wanna pivot to a soft rebuild.

Correct, and maybe Jerry is paying it back by sending Cooper to the Browns. I’m sure Cooper is happy to go there.

Get it right 16 million for the best route runner in football and a # 1 WR can't wait for the excuses next year, just like 2017.

Oh this myth that Cooper is opening up things for our offense. You think he’s worth his salary I don’t. You think he’s a #1 WR I don’t. Your hung up on the fact that I don’t think he’s the player you think he is. Where was all the interest for the player ? If his 20 m per year is in line with his talents where we’re the better offers to get his services ? Certainly a team with cap space and the need for a WR would have jumped to get the guy. Is it possible that your opinion of the player is higher than most people in front offices that do this for a living. Hmmm.

I'm not hung up on anything. You want to draw double coverage on the outside to
open up the middle. Dalton Schultz will get a nice raise because of this.
Cooper drew double coverage consistently. Lamb couldn't beat it in the KC game.

In terms of teams who would've jumped to get him, as you say.
The FO had control of that.
So, eliminate the NFC East teams.
Then eliminate every remaining team in the NFC.
Then eliminate teams strapped with QB contracts. (the reason this is a topic, by the way)
So, that leaves teams like the Jets, Jaguars and Browns.
Pretty simple really. (The Jags really blew an opportunity here, imo.)

Also, by trading for him, the Browns can easily re-do his contract.
So the $20 million you're hung up on goes away, if they want it to.

Try real hard to remember what it was like just before Cooper arrived.
The beginning of that year we were told "we don't need a true #1
in this offense" only to desperately search for one halfway into the season.

Now we're back to that. We have an unproven player at #1,
hopefully Lamb will be up to the task.
And our #2 is coming off a very recent ACL injury.
Oh, and he gets a new contract too. (a foregone conclusion after today)

I'm sure Cooper in Cleveland will look like Randy Moss in Oakland.
Or, OBJ in.... Cleveland. So, it's a lose-lose situation for those involved.

Anyway, it's Saturday. Life goes on. Enjoy the remainder of your weekend.
Monday will be here in what will feel like 20 minutes.

With or without Cooper this team is what it is. One thing we probably agree on is this ownership has no clue. They have yet to prove that they know how to build a team to compete at a playoff level. Like it or not I see this year as a bridge to Payton. Can he put together the kind of roster to compete for a title is spite of the ownership ? That’s a lot to ask.

Glad we're getting picks, but wow. That's not much. I'll have to see how the local fans think about it (I live in Cleveland).

Its not great — Dak has improved his throwing motion since Cooper first arrived, but without Cooper teams just clogged the middle of the field to take away Witten and Beasley and force Dak to throw outside. Before Cooper we couldn’t do that and defenses didn’t have to do much else to beat us. Cooper forced the middle of field back open, so I hope they have a plan.

I feel bad for Cooper — being sent to the team that the Giants sent OBJ because they wanted to punish him and ruin his career for being a big pain. What did Cooper do to deserve this? Does that 5th provide anything besides the ability to say we got something for him? Do we get greater cap relief because he is traded rather than released??

Seems like the nice thing to do for Cooper would be to release him.

His base is 20 for the next 3 seasons. I get you're hurt, but he underachieved for all of the accolades you're giving him.
