In a hypothetical scenario where there is a DE on the board at 24, Karlaftis and/or Mafe seem to be the most likely candidates.

Which would be your preference?
Would you pass on both?

Anyone other than Hutch, Thibs, or Johnson on your radar as 1st round consideration?

Ojabo off the board completely at 24?

Karlaftis

Maybe Ebiketie over Mafe

Mafe was in a rotation in 2021 and was off the field far more often that I would expect if he is worth a 1st round pick.

We was not a starter before 2021 and not really a full time starter in 2021.

I like both. I like Karlaftis more. People talk his power up, but I think he is a more versatile rusher than people credit him for. I think both had 10+ sack potential, but I could see Mafe being Robert Quinn like too

Ojabo off the board my board at 24? Ya.

However if he is still there at 40, I get aggressive

i like karlaftis' size.
but i like mafe's athletic ability.
i think karlaftis will go rd1...mafe high in the 2nd but wouldn't be shocked if he moves up into the 1st.
as far as passing them up.
thats a great question.
i would if its for kenyon green...zion johnson or treylon burks.
if those guys are gone and nkobe dean as well...id go with karlaftis...right now.
come draft night...mafe might be higher.
love both players tho.
i'd rather have travon walker or jermaine johnson if we go de.
maybe we end up with ojabo in the 2nd.

Karl is a balanced Edge who can play 3 downs, Mafe is more of a rush specialist at this juncture.

Playing in the same division of the same conference, Mafe had the same number of TFLs as Karlaftis and 3 more sacks last year. It's weird how Mafe is billed as this raw edge guy when he's already been productive.

Karlaftis is also billed as this big, rugged power guy while Mafe is a small Freeney-esque speed rusher, but they're actually almost identical in size. Both are exactly 6'3" 3/4", both have exactly 32 5/8" arms, and Karlaftis is only 5 lbs heavier.

Where they differ is that Mafe has absolute face-ripping speed... Karlaftis isn't even close. I see a similar floor with Karlaftis and Mafe, but the latter has a far, far higher ceiling.

Good points.

In game footage, Mafe is not one of those speed rushers that is easily pushed wide of the QB when the OT just barely touches them.
- He has that ability to plant his feet while turning the corner.
- He's not an elite 'bend' guy but many quality pass rushers can turn the corner without DWare type bend.

The Problem:
Mafe played in 13 games in 2021 but only started 9 of them. It was his 4th season. We was only an occasional starter in any of the previous 3 seasons.

His game footage looks good and he has good measurables but something seems off with his college career.

He is one of those prospects where the interview and checking with college coaches is very important.

It turned out that Jaylon's biggest problem wasn't even the injury. It was that he is dumb as a stump. Morris Claiborne type dumb.
- The Cowboys were too focused on his injury to notice that he didn't have the mental ability to play LB in the NFL.
- Parsons knew the defense better than Jaylon did on day one of training camp despite Parsons being a rookie.

It's not always raw intelligence. Randy Gregory had a very high (pardon the pun) SAT score but is emotionally the equivalent of a 13 girl obsessed with boy bands.

With some players it is more than obvious that no interview is even necessary. Zack Martin. Sean Lee. Witten.

The entire draft media seemed to overlook that Micah Parsons has Sean Lee type on-field instincts but in the body of Schwarzenegger's Terminator character.
- Actually, even with movie effects, the Terminator couldn't move like Parsons...

Karlaftis seems safe in that regard unless he has anger issues.
- I get a strong sense of "All-In" on football from him.

Unfortunately the mental side of draft prospects is where we as fans have the least information.

Hopefully they get one of them

1 Johnson
2 Ebiketie
3 Williams
4 Malone

Karlaftis is an all around player who isn't particularly explosive off the edge. He's a power end who will have to rely on hand work and technique to be productive. His arms also aren't as long as you would like. He's kind of a poor man's Chris Long, TBH.

Mafe is a boom/bust guy. Great physical tools. Marginal production. I'd be fine with him in the third or so, but I wouldn't touch him in the first. Too many unanswered questions as to why he didn't produce more.

Johnson would be the best first round pick for the Cowboys - I wouldn't wait 5 seconds if he was on the board at #24 to take him. Travon Walker is another guy who intrigues me as a three down guy who can be solid in all phases.

Ojabo, to me, would be great with one of those fifth rounders as a flyer, but he will probably be gone before the third. I wouldn't take him before the fourth, but would prefer the fifth. With Achilles injuries, it's hard to know how much explosiveness he would lose from the injury, and his game is his takeoff.

Dominique Robinson is a later round guy who is raw as raw can be, but has some interesting tools to work with.

Could be any number of reasons, especially if he was the focus of opposing teams’ game plans in terms of pass protection.

Joey Bosa only had 5 sacks in 12 games his last season at OSU.

There weren't any other threats on the Purdue DL to take attention away from him.
