Must solve this problem - stopping the run

I hate to be labor the issue but it's really common sense there is a ton of 200 to 250 lb guys that run fast are extremely strong and athletic.

But there are only a handful of 350 lb guys like that and if you don't get one when the opportunity presents itself the team that makes it a priority and does is going to abuse you with that individual if you meet them in the playoffs.

This problem has haunted the Cowboys defense for decades and they do not seem to get it.

I wanted Parsons for this reason and thought that would help and they try and turn him into a pass rusher because they weren't very good at it across the DL. In the playoff game, did you see him help stop a run game that gave up 170 with a 2nd tier, maybe 3rd, QB? The QB was not likely to beat them.

How bad was it? He completed 60% of his passes for 172 yards, 2 less than they rushed for, and one pick and no.

The opportunity is there in free agency and the draft but will they take it? If not, nothing changes.

This one baffles , for the last 2-3 years our inability to stop running has been our doom in the playoffs , still the team mgmt is not taking any steps to do anything .

Getting beaten in the trenches again and again , still not shoring up the lines ….

Both super bowl teams have huge dudes at NT and those dudes were instrumental in their super bowl runs. Cincy was 5th and LAR was 6th at stopping the run.
Greg Gaines is only 6-1 312, DJ Reader is the huge guy at 6-3 346. But both were had in the draft pretty cheaply, Gaines with a 4th and Reader with a 5th by the Texans and then Bengals paid him over $13 million aav in free agency.

How bad was it? He completed 60% of his passes for 172 yards, 2 less than they rushed for, and one pick and no TD's. They controlled the clock with 34 minutes TOP. He passed it 25 times and they ran it 37 times between Mitchell and Samuel for 2 TD's.

They have eschewed the space eating DT's that can shut the middle down so they have to do the next best thing, get a MLB or keep Parsons at that position except under special circumstances. Vander Esch is not that guy. Wagner might me.

They have needs at OL, TE. WR but nothing more important than fixing this problem.

The Niners coaching staff saw the opportunity to out muscle and out tough the Cowboys defense and did just that. It is especially enlightening to hear Parsons say he should be locked up on the other teams best player and in this instance singled out Deebo Samuel. and he was unable to stop him when it was needed the most.

I am anticipating a run heavy NFC this season because most of the QB's are in the AFC.

The opportunity is there in free agency and the draft but will they take it? If not, nothing changes.
My dream pick: Jordan Davis. Too bad he won't be there at 24 and the Cowboys won't use a premium pick on the DL. The last 1st round DL draft pick I can recall Dallas made was Russell Maryland (who anchored their D when they won 3 SBs). I think he will have a Vita Vae type impact, which would benefit Micah and Tank.

Run defense is important, as we saw vs 49ers.

I hear you brother you and I have been bench racing this since The old forum when we moved up and drafted Claiborne instead of Dontari Poe.
People were saying he was a workout warrior and wouldn't necessarily pan out in the NFL but he did very well for a while and we should have drafted him instead of Claiborne

Looks like you have a totally freakish talent in Jordan Davis at 6-6 playing at 350-360 and running like a 4.7 40 . Trade up do what ever it takes to get him . These guys dont come along every year . Fix the Oline in FA and shoot the works for a generational player .

Then sit back and watch what it does for everyone else on the defense. Think Micah looked good last year watch what happens when this guy is taking up half the Oline to keep him neutralized.
Exactly....I laugh @ how everyone loves the Georgia defense...yes they have some really athletic guys....but you take away the big guy in the middle....not nearly the same team. He made everyone so much better. He made Nakobe Dean...Wyatt....

I hear you brother it's like groundhog day every year.
Serious fans are concerned every year about stopping the run and every year like clockwork we do not use a first-round pick to fix this problem.

And every time we do make the playoffs and everybody's good the lack of being able to stop the run bites us in the behind and we lament over it.

That's why I kind of get a little frustrated out of bench racing it over and over again because we fans know what it takes to fix the problem and we would have used a first round pick on a giant 6-6. 350 lb generational player that was 22 years old and we could potentially get quite a few years out of kind of like we did Tyron on the offensive side of the ball.

But no when we are lucky enough to make the playoffs we must sit in frustration and watch the ball get run down our throats.
Jerry thinks run stopping is purely about the LB's. He truly doesn't comprehend the role NT's play in stopping the run, and how much effect a good one has on the entire D.

Build. Low build is leverage. Gotta quit thinking of it in weight terms alone.

Well said and that's how our linebackers usually drafted injured to begin with get banged up even worse because they are expected to take the pounding of continually stopping the run.

Hard to say how long Micah will be able to take the beating of being the Swiss army knife that handles every job on defense because we don't have adequate support up front

Wagner.....get the C from Cleveland and Wagner...then your draft can fill the rest. With Wagner #11 can hunt QB's 90% of the time.
Thats how you win in FA, but I would be shocked if we concluded with either,, 911 stroke time if we concluded with both.
I would go out asap and purchase a new cowboys cap.

Honestly...I'd be very tempted to move up if Jordan Davis were to slip out of the top 10. Problem is...we.... got holes everywhere else...:(
Eagles will find a way to draft Davis and it wont be very difficult for them to achieve with their 3 1sts.
I hate seeing Davis end up in our division period but going to the Egals.
Will be as bad as when we witnessed Fletcher Cox being drafted by them.

Agreed
none of the machinations (including Wagner) will work unless we get a real 1T DT
Agree to a point, but adding a Wagner to this defense supercharges a very young athletic back 7.
We have some young DL trying to do something, so as much as I would love to discover a true 1 we havent yet.
Guess good ones dont just grow on trees.

So no Aaron Donalds in the room, but few rosters have one, but at the least we do have young talent that is familiar with exactly what Quinn is trying to accomplish.

It's a typical Jerry ..."if it dont shine, I dont want it".

Don't look for any more significant signings in vet free agency. According to Tom Ryle, that's not a likely possibility at all. He knows this team's front office preferences quite well. I'm just passing on what he's reported lately. That's what a continuation of this team's structured policy indicates. With another $10 million coming in June for La'el Collin's departure, maybe there's room enough for another addition, if Stephen is willing to spend it. He usually prefers to hold a good amount in reserve, however. The Dallas FO's spending habits are a far cry from the spending habits of the Rams, like it or not. o_O

Run defense is important, as we saw vs 49ers.

Protecting an underperforming QB that's lost his mobility. An O-Line that can compete without resorting to holding penalties. An offense that can execute a two minute drill.

.....those are the areas that lost us the 49er's game. At the end of the day if we can concede less that 25pts we should win.

We may not be great against the run (we're middle of the road, on NFL 2021 rankings), but that doesnt lose us games, and its infinitely improved over the 2020 shambles.

I'm not adverse to signing a true 1-tech NT, but for the reason than he creates gaps and enables pass rushing, not because he's a big body that fills a gap.

We at least have DT's....O-Line first, unless you want McGovern at LG and Josh Ball covering Tyron (Mr 8 games) and Steele.

i don’t agree at all
We do not have a single top 10 DT on the roster. Bodies don’t equal production.
We don’t need Donald but we need one difference maker at DT position

I wouldn’t sign Wagner at this stage. He is clearly looking to be paid and on the downswing of his career. If we were thinking SB this year it might be another story but we will be a one and done team again so he’s not worth it. Build the lines
