Problem: "Winfrey doesn’t have a great set of pash rush skills and is primarily a run defender"

While Dallas does need improved run defense, what they need most is a run defender AND pass rusher for the middle. We have 3 techs already, if we can't get improved pass rushing up the middle teams will just stand in the middle of the pocket, push the DEs to the outside or behind the qb and pass us silly.

Yes I know combo pass rusher/run defenders are hard to find, but taking lesser quality DTs as "seconds" isn't going to help....

Not true. I watched just about every game he's played. He has the raw skill to be a real force. I've seen him bulldoze linemen back into the qb and he's deceptively nimble for a guy his size. Will need a year in S&C I think. He's a strong guy naturally but Lincoln Riley and crew focused more on agility than strength which is why he's considered raw. I'd 100% take him in the 3rd and would consider using a 2nd. In 2 years he would be out best DT and a standout in the league.

Unless Davis slips I dont see them going DT early at all.

Maybe 6th-7th round competition for Bohanna/Watkins.

They never valued it....and we continue to get murdered inside in playoff games.

Failure is apparently NOT a measure of doing something wrong.

how people cannot see that a really good 1T that occupies 2 blockers will improve our pass rush without himself getting sacks is beyond me

I guess I will chalk it up to willful ignorance

Senior bowl MVP with 2 sacks.
Beat Zion Johnson in 1 on 1 pass rush drill
Played out of position at Oklahoma as NT and still had 5.5 sacks and 11 TFL
4.89 second 40 yard dash
Cowboys view him as a pass rusher.
Profiled at about the 15 minute mark:

He did NOT play his best position in college - he’s a PURE 3T (could maybe play 5T as well), NOT a NT. Good NT/1T MUST be able to battle double teams successfully and free up others…PERIOD!!!!! That is their primary function. If they develop into a nice pocket pusher-type pass-rusher, then that’s just the icing on the cake. Travis Jones and Winfrey would be ONE HECK OF A DT combo.

He is another developmental 3T. We already have 3 on our roster. Hard pass from me and on Leal as well.
IMO, Leal is a strong side DE who has the size to jump inside to the 3T on occasion. He is not a 3T, and if expectation are that he is, people will be frustrated. He has the size, strength, and speed of most tackles, and has to be accounted for every play. I think Leal would be a great Tank replacement. I think he gets you 5-9 sacks a year, and plays the running game pretty well. He has the size and weight to not be injured all the time like some of our smaller, quicker, players (Sean Lee) that are very good players, but can't stay healthy.

Great athleticism, in ways that project for 3 techs (raw speed).

Senior production checks the right boxes.

Had a great Senior Bowl, beating pro-level athletes in pro-style situations.

I think he's a top 50 level player all day. I don't really like the idea of drafting another 3 tech, but Winfrey can play.

He is a tweener with big time bust potential.

Easy...he's another Maliek Collins type prospect.

We need a 1T though not a 3T.

You could strongly argue that the Cowboys still need a 3T, because they have bodies rather than actual producers.

This team can't wait for a player that "needs a year" or has only "raw skill".

And while you feel he's going to be great, his draft grades by the (admittedly not always correct) draft writers doesn't agree.

3rd round is probably where he is about at, but the Cowboys, IF they are going to significantly upgrade the DT position, it needs to be earlier than the 3rd round.

Hey, the thread title said "sell me" on him. Haven't done that for me, sorry....

Oh cute, let's just start off with the insults, right?

You could have just posted "A really good 1T that occupies 2 blockers will improve our pass rush without himself getting sacks" and that would have effectively made your opinion (which you are certainly entitled to, but so am I).
But trying (didn't work, by the way) to belittle my posts right off the bat is totally unnecessary and only hurts your position.

Anyway, certainly a good 1T can help the pass rush, BUT what I was saying, which I have no problem expressing again, was that the BEST option for Dallas is the DT that has BOTH pass rushing and run stopping skills (a la Aaron Donald) would be the GREATEST benefit.

I did not, and was not attempting to, say the kid didn't have skills and couldn't benefit the Cowboys. You read way too much into my comment...
