* Should Cowboys avoid injury and character players in the draft ?
Particularly early rounds ?

Is it a case by case player basis ? Or should they begin to make it a philosophy to avoid both areas ?

- OT Josh Ball was at least considered a 2nd round talent generally but slipped to 4th round and
selected by Cowboys - It's a wait and see on Ball.

- We know well about the Randy Moss character concerns - he's a future Hall of Famer
- Just as we know about with current situation with KJoseph

- we took a major shot despite major injury concern on Jaylon Smith and his huge knee issue.
overall how did that turn out

- Didn't LVE already have a red flag on his neck pre-draft. yet we took him 1st round ? Just hasn't been same as his sensational rookie year.

- RB Demarco Murray had an injury riddled college career at OU, .. but he had a solid career here as a Cowboys including to this very day, setting Cowboys record for most single season yardage output.

- LB Sean Lee was a medical red flag from Penn State into injury riddled NFL career- although he
was a playmaker and legit leader.

For whatever reason, with the exception of DLaw, the 2nd round has been a killer. If we are being honest, the 3rd round hasn't been much. These are two rounds we should still have a few starters.

I have a dream that they'll be too concerned with PR backlash of drafting a character concern prospect after what happened with Kelvin Joseph to actually draft a certain prospect I'm not a fan of.

It's a nice dream, but it won't happen. They cannot stop gambling on that to save their life. They want to believe they're going to get a first round prospect at a discount.

As to medical stuff, I wouldn't be surprised if they took the injured receivers off the board because of Gallup's injury.

my gut says yes...but if wr jameson williams falls to 24....or de david ojabo to 56...i'm not gonna blame them.
they will recover from their injuries and be really good players in this league.

as for off the field stuff...i'd rather just avoid the nonsense.

Agreed.

This is what is pushing me away from George Pickens. Love him game, but the more I read the less I like him.

I think they need Sri string together a few (3-4) solid with no risky picks to build a solid base. After that is ok to take a risk every now and then but not every single year in the 2nd round.

Definitely avoid injured players. Players get injured enough, avoid those prone to it.

They reportedly love Sam Williams, who was accused of raping a woman, but charges were dropped. Garrett never did well with poor character players, but Quinn might be different.

This organization, due to the absolute lack of team control and leadership that they allow the head coach, cannot handle players who have character issues. They can cite the Calvin Hill programs, but where are the true success stories from that program? Nearly every player who came in with warts ended up flaming out in some way. And, with Sam Williams, it isn't just a rape accusation. He was expelled from his high school for pulling a knife on another student.

You could easily go back and redraft several day 1 and day 2 picks and make the argument we would be a significantly better team today if they had.

....and there we have it, the OP gives a premise and you then quantify and grade the severity of the concern.
If you want a safe pick (no personal/physical issues) you're probably going to reach.

Of course we should, but we won't. Jerry likes to strike oil where few others would prospect. As we all know, he loves to use his second round pick on a first round talent who slipped.

We definitely need more RKG types. That worked out so well for a decade.

In the first, second round yes. Third round probably. After that, fill your boots.
