Still believe the top 3 are unchanged

Follow the money. The position is becoming one of the most expensive non QB spots. Don't like it either, but it makes sense from the cap perspective, not the team building one.

LOL, what's more important? A better team or a better cap?

If the Cowboys take a WR in the first round because of escalating WR contracts, they are dumber than I imagined.

I dont agree with you here. They already spent a first rounder on Lamb. They blew another first rounder two years prior on Cooper. Just spent 12 million in FA on Gallup. Thats plenty. In my eyes, all they need is a 4th developmental guy with some upside.

If they use another first round pick on a WR, that would be 3 first rounders in 5 years on the WR position. That would be a gross misuse of your most prized asset.

Then we have the fact that WR is stacked and deep this year. Perfect opportunity to get one on the 2nd day and get a good one.

WR is stacked pretty much every year now. You can get one when you really need one. I think what the Chiefs did was EXACTLY how you handle it. Get rid of them when they want 20 million or more, then draft one.

If this team was more active in FA about addressing holes instead of trying this BS about all their roster building comes in the draft, then maybe, taking a WR here would make sense. But they have massive holes at the interior OL positions, they are pretty short on talent at DE, they always need DT talent (that showed when San Fran outmuscled us).

Taking a WR at 24 would be silly IMO unless their board was just wasted in terms of DL or OL.

Look we can all cry about how the Cowboys use FA. But I cant fault them for not spending huge money on a guard when they can probably get one right here in the first round.

This Oline needs to be rebuilt, not plug a stop gap hole in FA. Long term issue not a one year fix.

And hell yah I agree on DE and DT. Two other big reasons why taking a WR would be a huge mistake.

After this offseason, it's clearer than ever that they're completely clueless, having intentionally dismantled a decent team and created even more holes to fill thru the draft. These weren't smart business moves either; we jettisoned cap space to sign the likes of LVE, Fowler, and Armstrong. You can basically expect that their first plan for this draft, whatever it is, is the wrong one, because it will be motivated by things that don't actually matter or help the team overall.

I actually like Burks, but this team needs so much more from this draft than a 3rd receiver.

I think dismantaling is a drastic word. It's more of a TBD lol. The puzzle has multiple missing pieces.

Cooper is a big loss. But had to be done. Gregory I am still meh on as he was either really good (Washington) or absolutely terrible (San Francisco). Losing Williams hurts, but come Thursday if they draft a Kenyon Green/Zion Johnson, is anybody really complaining about losing Williams? Wilson is another we'd love to have. You just don't pay a guy is likely a 4 here that kind of money. He got his bag and everybody in Dallas is happy for Ced.

So in reality

Cooper, Gregory = Big losses. Williams, Wilson = Minimal losses. If we can land something like Kenyon Green, Travis Jones. Khalil Shakir and then a Josh Pashchal are people still complaining about the team?

I just think it's highly unlikely to expect more than one or two quality starters from any draft. Especially when the team typically tends to go looking for role players and backups starting in round 3. We dug a hole and it's gonna be hard to get out

Oh for sure! I don't disagree.

It's a crap strategy to expect you to nail more than 1-2 starters in a single draft.

We have drafted well though

2018 - 6 starter / role players
2019 - 4 starter / role players ... 1 role player in Joe Jackson elsewhere
2020 - 4 starter / role players
2021 - Looks like 5 eventual starters and 2-3 role players.

But for every good year, you have a 2009 draft.

I don’t want another top receiver either but the cap is far tighter now paying too money to their QB. Cooper and Collins were already cap casualties

This draft is average. I don’t think anybody or any type of trade can be ruled out. I want a trade down to get an extra 3rd. I don’t think Zion/Green are any better then Smith.

Me too. I think an extra 3rd outweighs the talent gap.

The Gregory situation should have made it clear to all Cowboys fans they have zero clue what they are doing.

They were willing to spend 70 million on Gregory but when he left, that DE slotted money disappeared and they refused to entertain competent DEs to replace him with that money.

They don’t spend money to improve a roster or a position. They just spend it on random players that they drafted.

So what? Making your first round pick based on future potential cap implications is idiotic.

But now seeing more clearly how Stephen operates and manages the cap, stupidity like this should be expected.
