The intitial grade I have to go with a C. You had a potential top 10 pick at a premium position fall right into your laps. You make that move.

If I didn't like Smith as a player, Id give it an F for that alone. However I I think in 4 years he could be playing at a level of the OT's that went top 10. And all three of them are All Pro caliber talents

Jerry said something about Smith being 16 on their board. It was also reported they only had 15-16 guys with first round grades. Are they telling us they didn’t have Jermaine Johnson as a first round player?

I chose C

The kid has all the physical tools. He could wind up being a very good player.

my issue is with the process. The cowboys were clearly hell bent on taking him. Just like they were with T Hill and LVE and Taco.

They drafted for need. Not BPA which is what frustrates me.

This was my grade. Not an F because we need Oline. But they passed on strong talent; took a project and took a guy who exemplifies our issues…penalties

I'd give them a low C....but all else i agree with. I am concerned with him having CWilliams disease. Sometimes you just can't coach it out of them.....see CWilliams. Hoping i am wrong.

I really give it a b or b-. Biggest thing is he is a total project but hes only 20 years old. His technique is an absolute mess and maybe moving him inside will alleviate some of his penalty issues since he wont have to deal in space with athletes on the edge. We will see but his traits and age i can see it. Not a huge fan i would have taken Johnson there or even lloyd over him. But they are addressing the LOS and that is what they need to focus on even going into day 2.

B. People have reason to dislike the pick, as there is a lot of bust potential. However, I do believe in the potential of the player & he addresses our needs at starting left guard, swing tackle for when Tyron Smith inevitably gets injured, and Tyron Smith's long-term heir apparent.

Im guessing there were specific reasons why Johnson fell. He might have been off some boards. I havent heard anything about that up until the telecast mentioned "personality" Seems a pretty weak reason to pass on a potentially dominant pass rusher. But thats just me, I dont care about those things, and Ive been pimping Sam Williams in the 2nd

Hated it initially but after watching tape from the Ohio State game, I'm feeling better. He's raw, handsy, and his footwork is suspect at best. He's also incredibly powerful and surprisingly agile for a guy his size. There is a funky hitch in his first step and he tended to play too high, both being coachable, but if not corrected will cause some problems. Don't like him at tackle, at least until he has a few years of mentorship under Tyron, but I'm thinking he will fit nicely at guard.

He played a bit of interior line in that game. Had a tough time keeping track of him in the second half as they were moving their linemen around a good bit. From what I saw, he looked good. Struggled with speed rushers in the second half but that wouldn't be a problem at guard. It did seem like he wore down as the game went on and I didn't see him on the field on the last couple of series. Something to keep an eye on. May need to drop a few lbs but some time in the s&c program will do a world of good.

Bottom line: he's a dominant force on the line but has some technical issues that need to be fixed. He threw players around with ease at times and let them run by him at others. Will need some strong coaching and a ton of reps to be ready for the season but the sky is the limit if he's smart enough to learn from the coaches and experienced players. I'm looking forward to studying more film. He's alot of fun to watch.

Grade: B- with the potential to be an A+

It will take a miracle for this season at the cost of games.

Mel liked the pick. Prisco liked the pick. McShay liked it too.

Not the unanimous garbage some might have expected.

Went with a C grade.

Better talent was available on the board especially on defense, I would of picked Loyd, Dean or Johnson.

They did consider defense but basically, they drafted the kid because he would have been gone otherwise and the T/G talent was dwindling.

I like the player, can play the left side G or T and is a big, mean and athletic player but needs seasoning and is a bit raw.

I will give him a chance and if he can solidify LG and eventually switch to LT when Tryon retires, I will upgrade his grade.

Truly hard to argue against building the trenches but better players were available so need was a factor.

C. How did this make us better? We let two O linemen go and yet we draft a guy with a ton of penalties when penalties was a massive reason why we lost against San Fran.

If what Jerry is saying is true...he should just stop embarrassing himself for grading him at 16..... says more about their lack of intelligence than their draft shrewdness. The guy just can't keep his mouth shut even when he says stupid things.
