He’ll be playing under the tag this season. The Cowboys want to see one more season before they commit to a long-term deal with him. They only franchised him because of Blake Jarwin’s injury and the loss of Amari Cooper and Cedric Wilson. They couldn’t afford to lose 2 quality WRs and their starting TE. Franchising Schultz was a move they had to make.

They are hoping against hope Ferguson shows enough to let Schultz walk. If he has a good camp he will get plenty of opportunities in 12 formation.

It’s going to be tough for Ferguson to show enough to allow Schultz to walk if he has a great season. Although Schultz struggles as a blocker he’s gotten better as a receiver every season. His numbers ranked fifth amongst TEs last season. He’s become a very good security blanket for Dak and he moves the chains. Ferguson would have to have a terrific rookie season to allow Schultz to walk. We don’t want to leave ourselves in a situation where TE is a top priority entering the draft next year. The trenches are still going to be a problem and it’s going to take time to fix it. At some point we’re going to have to invest a top pick on a big nasty DT. We’re going to have to get more physical in the trenches or it’s going to be our undoing every season.

If Schultz is committed to being a better blocker he will be worth the money. He can get there. He came in to the league as more of a blocking TE. He didn't stop blocking until he started catching the damn ball. If he does that, we may pay him. I don't believe currently the Jones boys view him as worthy of that contract.

Ferguson will have to be pretty good, but there are typically serviceable TEs to be had in FA as well.

He’s franchised this year and can be franchised again next year, I see no rush to get a long term deal done.

It took Schultz three seasons to come into his own. Most fans including myself were ready to cut him after his second season. Ferguson would have to have a very good rookie season for the Cowboys to even consider moving on from Schultz because we need more than just a serviceable player as our starting TE.

Schultz is just another of our replaceable 8 figure players.

You know how to hurt a guy.

Not only did I have to watch Schultz get franchised this year, now I have to picture him getting franchised+20% next year. Ugh.

I'm a Schultz fan, and I wouldn't pay him anywhere near that. 4 years/35 mil. That's about what he should get.

yah, that sounds about right. Im not paying 10 million or over for Shultz and I like him as well.

Shultz is a top 10 tight end so you better lock him up before we have another Cooper, Tank, and Dak situation. I bet he signs a contract similar to the Cleveland tight end if it was offered. Let’s put it this way I would trust Shultz more then Jarwin. We gave him 9 million a year. The cap is about to go up sky high. The contract like Dak’s will be a discount in the coming seasons. I would front load the contract now because we are not going to sign anyone else.

If the goal is to become an average mediocre football team then yeah he’s replaceable. It’s very easy to stick an average, lesser player in there. Like I said his numbers ranked 5th amongst TEs last season. He was tied for the team lead with 8 TD catches and had a 9th TD called back due to a penalty. He’s developed into a very good player. We can’t just keep moving on from our draft picks because they’ve become good players and are going to command a big salary.

Franchise him this year and see if he continues on an upward trend. However, if he shares numbers close to Ferguson, I thank him and wish him the best of luck.

Shultz is a top 10 tight end and his stats prove it

The way to become mediocre is to pay franchise money to replaceable players.

Schultz had great numbers as the 4th or 5th option on the field. Easy row to hoe.
