This guy might actually have the leverage and gravitas to keep Jerry in check,,, though even Parcels had a tough time with that.

My gosh this topic has been beaten to death. Jerry doesn't want him & Sean doesn't want Jerry.

Payton only has one SB championship with a hall of famer quarterback. Same as McCarthy. Only difference, Payton won it in five years after taking over the HC's job in New Orleans, while MM won it in 6 years after taking over the HC's in GB. Ironically, the Packers won the SB the following year the Saints did.

It's an offset! :lmao:

Sean would jump at the chance to coach the Cowboys guaranteed. The problem will be the comp.

Hey we have seen players do it for years and now Coaches are like "I need a pay raise, let me use Jerry as leverage"

I have no doubt if McCarthy falls flat on his face that Jerry will go after Payton. They have a good relationship, so I would think there would be mutual interest.

Did I read the Saints owner may allow a sweet heart deal because of what Payton did for the city. It’s a hell of a story

Cash is not the issue, it’s the draft comp that is the problem
The other big problem is whether or not the Jones boys will agree to back off. I doubt there’s a legit top shelf NFL HC that would agree to coach here without some changes in the way this thing is run.

Which is why I seriously doubt Payton will ever be the HC in Big D. I can’t see Jerry giving up his micromanagement for anyone.

I agree that Sean Payton is over rated; he is very good but not like he has been proclaimed. Proof is in the FACT that he only got to 1 SB with a HOF QB and a LOT of control as regards the roster.
again and again the Saints failed in post season because the D never held up. Now granted one of those failures was a corrupt refs fault but otherwise?

Now is he about the best we could get? Probably unless you want to take a flyer on some up and coming OC. Problem with any coach hiring is who is doing it.

the MAJOR problem is that Payton will want the same control AT LEAST that BP had and there is NO way Jerry Jones lets that happen again.
WE will not get a real top coach until at least Jerry is DEAD. But sadly his son seems no smarter.

We all can dream, I guess. :muttley:

152-89, 1 SB, 9-8 in postseason, 4 losing seasons
143-92-2, 1 SB, 10-9 in postseason, 3 losing seasons

One of those is Payton, the other is McCarthy. How does Payton have so much "leverage and gravitas" in comparison?

Wow....he should have no problem getting a job. He has 2023 choices. And you say those are only his top 2023? :omg:

I agree. After seeing how Jerry handled Jimmy Johnson and Tom Landry, I doubt he would relinquish anything to Payton.

Agree with those who say not much difference between Payton and McCarthy. Jerry brought back Skip Peete of all people. Not hard to see him going after Payton if Big Mac fails. Jerry likes his boys.

All things considered though, not sure why people would knock Payton's hiring. Unless you want to keep Big Mac in there and give him more years, you're not going to find many candidates more qualified than Payton.

Unless you're going to hire Bill Belichick or luck out on one of the LA Ram/Cincy Bengals 30-year-old wonder boy coaches, it's not a bad hire at all.

Mike McCarthy will have his chances to prove himself worthy this season.

Jerrah would surely have plenty of competition for Sean Payton, however.

Sean Payton is a true innovator and offensive mind. Using all his tools in the toolbox and finding a role for them. He is a better coach than MM no question about it. One of the best in the league. He would be the perfect pairing with Quinn and coming in during the optimum time if he came in next season. He could revamp the rushing attack and gear the offense to his liking with some great pieces to work with already here. Some minor tweaking and another good offseason and we could be right in the hunt for the next 4 years.
