When I was a young man playing ball I thought they were saving #49 for me. :muttley:

My first year I wore #43 then #49. I liked it, probably because it was odd for someone who ended up long-snapping.

You used to see it on NFL RBs and WRs back in the 70s.

No player ever wore #49 until 2001.

Is it just a bad number, or......?

Was it because Tom Landry wore 49 as a player?
I seriously doubt it had anything to do with Landry. Just not a popular number.

I do not think the Cowboys have officially retired any player number, but there are player numbers they simply do not allow players to select for a period of time.

I think after enough time has gone by, all numbers should be made available again to the next generation of players. That in no way dismisses the accomplishments of past players, especially if they won Super Bowls, awards, etc.

In the past, teams retired numbers of players who achieved and meant a lot to an organization throughout their career. These days, however, players care more about their own careers and next contracts than they do their team-of-the-moment (not a complaint, it is just reality) and they tend to change teams more often, so I see no reason to consider retiring any player numbers.

think it had to do with the NFL numbering system

until 1973 the number was unofficially for defensive backs.
In 73 NFL imposed numbering system and 20-49 group was for RB's and DB's.
The next change opened up the number for TE and LB (dont know the year-sometime in the 80's).
only recently has it opened up for DB,RB,TE,LB,WR, DL

It is. All 40s number look odd to me.

But these new number rules are even worse. Why the NFL adopted these college numbers is criminal.
I think its more that no one really want to be 49. It doesnt seem to be that common a number anywhere.

To knowledge we have never retired jerseys. I could be wrong though

It's a number we rarely give out in honor of the San Francisco 49ers.

90 people in camp. You can't retire numbers anymore.

A number in camp doesn't count. Notice how every 74 in camp every year gets changed if they make the team.

Dallas doesn't officially retire numbers, but you don't see 12, 8, 22, or 74 worn during the regular season anymore.

To me the entire jersey number thing is passé. They are now allowing these players to go back to their numbers they wore in college.
