No, sir! If you've played the sport, they teach you the proper way to tackle is exactly how Basham hit, wrapped up and tackled the QB. If the NFL doesn't want any defender to tackle any QB, JUST COME OUT AND SAY IT. JUST SAY..."REGARDLESS OF THE RULE OF HOW TO TACKLE, YOU CAN'T TACKLE A QB UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE."
Thing is, it doesn't even discourage players from doing it, it usually just gives teams another 15 yards of free field position and often a new set of downs. The rushers truly can't help it if they wanted to.

The owners don't care. Whatever promotes offense. It'll never get fixed. If anything it'll go even further the other way.

That's why Roger Staubach's career was so special. He played when there was no such thing as "in the grasp" or "unnecessary roughness"" or
Llp"leading with the helmet" penalties.

You pretty much had to paralyze a QB for life before they called roughing the passer.

So a defensive player now has to think how he hits a QB huh. So now going full speed and navigating the offensive line he has to somehow shift to 75 percent speed and hopes one that he doesn't hit with his helmet and 2 he doesn't land to hard on the QB.....wow....may as well put flags on the QB, thats where its headed.

I thought Basham's penalty was nonsense. He led with his helmet. Sure. But as long as a player wears a helmet when he makes a tackle like that the helmet will be out front. He speared him? Again, if his helmet made contact with the upper chest or head area then I can see calling a penalty, but you can't hit low either so I thought hitting him in the gut was a perfectly legal hit and safer for the QB than the tackler who risks neck injury.

It is getting to the point where you can't hit the QB anymore.

But the crown of his helmet went into his gut. That's spearing.
Nope. Totally disagree. Basham didn't lower his head low enough to use the very top "crown" of the helmet to make contact with the QB's gut. It was more the top part of the T-face bar and front curvature of the helmet. Plus, as soon as Basham's helmet touched the QB's gut, he instinctively turned his head sideways, thus negating any driving/spearing effect. This should not have been called a foul.

All he had to do to avoid a penalty was to move 8 inches to one side or the other.

I don't know how you can watch that play and not see the spearing or the fact that he drove him into the ground. The only way that doesn't get called is if it's our QB.

Basham did not throw his weight on top of the QB. He fell on the QB's legs and torso. That should not have been a foul. There was no driving into the ground either like in the video it is being compared to. Two totally different tackles.
Sorry for the delay. I edited a portion of last night's broadcast and uploaded it to YouTube.

Isaiah Stanback was at Enpower Field. Do you also disagree with his assessment of the call immediately after the play?

No, you guys are wrong. It's clear as day that it's not spearing.

The Basham one I can kind of get but the Williams one still has me perplexed. He hit him in the midsection with his shoulder as much as his helmet. The helmet part of the rule is to prevent guys from just lowering their head and using the helmet as a weapon. That's not really what Williams did.

The Basham one, he did kind of land on the QB (the proverbial driving into the ground), so I guess I can understand.

I totally disagree with Stanback for the reasons already explained.

At some point in time, everyone will figure out that the rules are just a tad different for the Dallas Cowboys.

14 penalties in a home playoff game, LOLLLLLLL

Disciplined enough to be #1 in the NFL in points, yards and takeaways... while also SOMEHOW being incredibly undisciplined when it comes to penalties LOLLLLLL
:lmao2:

You are missing a key point. The league clearly does not want defensive players driving the guys into the turf and landing on the QB. You may not like it but that's the rule and it appears Basham does just that. Yes, he wraps up nicely but he then drives the QB into the turf and lands on top of him. That's a no no by league rules.

It's become a joke. So defenders can't hit the QB anymore? What is a defender supposed to do? Stop short and allow the QB to step forward and complete a pass without touching him?

Half of those penalties were either delay of game, false starts or offsides, all stupid penalties on our part. And some of the holds were legitimate a well (granted, a few were bad calls too).

The biggest problem wasn't the refs, it was that for pretty much most of the year, we played undisciplined football and it cost us in a playoff game.

Good post. I wish younger fans had an opportunity to see what the NFL used to be. It has changed very much over the years. Tripping over a blade of grass will get you on IR nowadays. :muttley:
