If I was an important man, I would change that.

All my officials would be full time. It's a high paying, prestigious career, no need for a second job or side hustle, at least not on my time. There are millions of dollars at stake, and their calls have widespread effects. This means they are officiating everything from OTAs through the superbowl. They would all be trained together on subjective calls, until everyone saw these calls through one lens. Perfection is not expected, but the wide spread variance among crew philosophies would not be tolerated.

The officials would be sent out biweekly to work with teams on film, acceptable techniques, and what constitutes a penalty. Their job would not only be to call what's on the field, but to help educate players, and hopefully prevent the absolute disruption of game flow we currently experience.

My officials would be highly trained, year round. Just like everyone else works throughout the year, they are no different. Players train, and I'm busy eating cheetos and watching film. They need to be honing their craft as well.

The NFL has an officiating problem, but because they are so profitable and Goodell lacks the forward thinking skills, they sit on their hands and do nothing to improve the product. Once again, screw you Goodell.

It has been speculated that NFL officials earn $205,000 a year ( link ). How can the league ever attract more better qualified officials at $205K/year?

The league is a multi-billion dollar industry but it pays refs nearly three times less than the player average minimum. That's nuts.

They can afford to give them a raise and make sure they have a nice benefits package. Pay them what they are worth to the game, and make them earn it.

They should face the same consequences players face as well.

Both of these are bad calls.

Anything less than letting them play in both of these scenarios just takes away from the game.

Bad calls, both ways.

Just bad.

Hell, $205K a year should be plenty! It's not like they have to work out for hours a day, or practice, or risk major injury (for the most part). Got a link on how to get a job as a ref?

Their jobs should be full-time though. They should be adequately compensated for dedicated employment. Makes zero sense refs are part-time, getting paid a fifth of a mil every year, while Roger Goodell sits on the other end of the spectrum, hauling in $60 million plus.

However, that disparity is not isolated solely to their industry. And it would not be good for me to expound upon that aspect.

There will be ten teams ranked at the top ten of defensive rankings. Are you saying Dallas has no chance of fielding a top ten defense because of how the calls are made? I am asking because other defenses will be getting the same calls more or less.
I wouldn’t say NO chance, but I believe the subjective nature of this new initiative will render our defense less effective. I think we’ll lose a game or two because of it. Sure, it’ll affect everyone, but since they watch the Cowboys more closely, I think it’s negative impact will be greater, as far as timing goes.

Guess I will put a pin in this and wait-and-see how the defense ends up ranked this season. ;)

Work a part time job for 205k? I’ll take it! How many people do you know work full time for less than HALF of that, on a job they hate?

That's the best paying part time job I've ever heard of.

What’s it looking like across the league. Was it just us. Or did other teams get bs ticky tack calls.

These are good questions that I will not be getting into. They do not address securing officiating good enough for a multi-billion dollar industry though.

The league is compensated with astronomical exclusive broadcast rights contracts. In exchange, the NFL employs sometimes subpar officials, who make critical decisions during their weekly product broadcasts.

The league should use the same principal with players. Just jettison all the players. Sign all CFL players for a fifth of what they were paying their players. tada! No one will notice the dip in on-the-field quality play.

Even if they end up say, 9th or 10th statistically, my point remains. This new standard will negatively impact the improvement of the defense. I can envision a number of 3rd and 4th down stops being negated by yellow flags: “…third and 18, Tampa at the Dallas 42. Dallas up by two. Sam Williams with a sack! The Bucs will have to punt! But wait, a flag! Roughing the passer! First down, Tampa! Now all they have to do is kick!”
