When looking at how the Cowboys have performed the last 5 years by month, some interesting things pop up:
  • The record in September the last 5 years is 10-9.
  • The record in October the last 5 seasons has also been 10-9.
  • For some reason the month of November has been putrid for the Cowboys the last 5 seasons. Our record in November since 2017 is 10-13.
  • Even worse, the Cowboys are 1-4 on Thanksgiving Day games.
  • And the month of December, we seem to rebound. The last 5 seasons, we are 15-5 in the month of December.
Some questions:
  • Why is November so bad? Is the team flat because of being tired?
  • Has the schedule been tougher in November?
  • Why has the Thanksgiving Day game performance been so bad?
  • Why has December been such a good month?
Your thoughts?

I don't see a big difference other than the records reflect we have been mostly mediocre the last 5 years.
Thanksgiving is a surprise.
You used to be able to guarantee a win there.

Bob, I used to think that it was the “culture” of a team that decided these kinds of things and having Mr Jones be the provider of that culture made it very easy to go with that theory.

But then we see the Bengals that have had the same crappy owner for the last 20+ years. Sure they picked up WR talent among other things, but it was the addition of a marquee quarterback that changed their course.

It has to be the right players jelling at the right time…..I’m starting to put the importance of good coaches lower on that totem pole of importance.

Don't we play a lot of divisional games in December?

The Cowboys cumulative record the past 5 seasons is 45-36 so with a .556 win % there aren't going to be many months where they have shown a winning record.

November storylines since 2017:

  • 2017 - Tyron Smith injured, Zeke Suspended. Offense dies. 2-3 record
  • 2018 - LVE and Cooper save the day. 5-1 record.
  • 2019 - Team made no improvements and was the beginning of the end. 2-3 record.
  • 2020 - Dak injured. Dalton injured. all time bad defense. 1-4 Record.
  • 2021 - 1-3. Denver changed defensive scheme from prior weeks and offense didn't adjust. KC basically beat us with one player (Chris Long) wrecking the OL. Raiders just threw it deep against Anthony Brown and got ALL the PIs.

I don't think it's anything about November in particular. I think that's just when attrition sets in and teams adjust to what you've done the first 2 months of the season.

Hasn’t a lot of division game been kicked to December in recent years? If my memory is correct weren’t they notoriously bad during December during at least part of the Romo era. Seems I remember the talking heads harping on it quite a bit!

KC and Raiders back to back sucked last year for sure. Plus Amari was out with Covid which is why he’s now playing for Cleveland.

The only thing I can think of on Turkey day is our team is more relaxed as they are at home on that short week and the opposing team doesn’t really have time to think just get off the plane and play.

And maybe it shows that Kellen Moore is incapable of adjusting to what DCs throw at him at mid season and then (as@Runwildboys pointed) in December they mostly play within the division…maybe it’s that simple.

Yeah probably. Hypothesis I would like to test if I had time:

I will bet that MOST offenses suffer a slump mid-season year over year. Last year that was a common refrain for KC, Dallas, TB, etc.

I seem to recall December being the fade away month during part of Romo's tenure. Is that accurate or just perception?

I guess in recent years it has helped that divisional games occur late in the season, and Dallas has done well there.

I think this corroborates with when they started putting a bunch of divisional games in December. Dallas has had 2-3 freebies every December since he came into the league

My guess? The Cowboys get so much attention they kinda tire a little after the halfway point. Plus, the audience of Cowboy haters is much larger than fans, and a Dallas loss makes a great Thanksgiving.

IMO, the number of “real haters” was much greater in the 70s and 90s when we were dominant. I kind of like it when the real hate comes flying at the Cowboys because it means we’re winning. I have some family and friends who are either Denver or Filly fans and their “hate” for us has decreased the last two decades. My bro in law and cousins both think it’s because we aren’t as good as we used to be.
