Stephen Jones prides himself how he handles the salary cap.
Well, this franchise has 25 million in dead cap space.
That is good? Really?
Just another example of how PRIDE goes before DESTRUCTION

The whole mishandling of the QB conract haunts this team now and going forward. If they were to trust their first thought which was this guy is a mirage and don't pay him, things would look a lot different. The moral of the story being: bus drivers are OK as long as it is on a rookie deal.

Then you have the RB contract too.

You bet......bus drivers and race car drivers are a whole different breed. You don't want a bus driver handling your race car at the Daytona International Speedway.

How does that compare to the rest of the league? Give some context.

Sure been watching one since 2016. Your un dieing love knows no bounds. Why don't you let the board know just how many number 4 jerseys hanging in the closet, be honest.

Its just so so much more complicated than that.

They had a locker room that got behind this guy 100%...to the extent they never put their starter back in(Tony Romo). You can argue to never let the layman steer the ship as much as you like. Dak looked serviceable as a QB, was a leader, doesnt turn ball over much and QB'd some very potent offenses leading up to his contract.

The QB market rates are insane. Unfortunately in a team sport at the most important position...I think a lot of teams are forced to pay what looks like a serviceable QB because they dont want to waste the primes of other players(think Martin and Tyrom Smith) looking for another QB when they are hard to find(think the 14 QB's between Aikman and Romo that could hardly complete a pass).

But yes...youre right. Dak probably has some serious flaws the casual doesnt know about or cant distinguish through the tv. Hes probably overpaid a bit. But do you waste other players primes in exchange for hope?

I don't care to defend Jones, but 25mil dead cap isn't that bad in relation to other teams.

5 teams have over 50mil dead cap this year.
19 teams have over 20mil dead cap this year.

Dead cap is just part of the NFL, especially when you cut guys on 2nd and 3rd contracts.

I much rather have 6.8mil dead cap for Jaylon smith than have Smith on the roster at 11.8mil.

According to overthecap.com, the Cowboys have just under $12 million of available cap space. They have over $26 million of dead money.

Over 50% of the dead money is on Jaylon, Amari, and Collins.

More importantly Stevie talking about his 5 year cap plan points to nothing changing when Jerry goes to the big owners box in the sky.

Of course they are clueless.

But i still think they keep the cap space to make it as much as comfortable for the new HC. MM is gone.

According to Broaddus, the Cowboys had doubts about Prescott. You can tell they had issues when they offered him a deal similar to what Tanihill got from the Titans. The problem is it is hard to evaluate quarterbacks. Mahomes went 10th, Rodgers went 23, and Herbert dropped to the 6th pick, Baker went 1st in the same draft as Allen and Jackson. It’s tough to evaluate these guys. Once you think you have one you do everything you can to keep him.

I have post history that proves Ive been suggesting someone in the building didnt want to pay Dak top QB money.

Why? Because Jerry overpays his players. Why would he hesitate to pay Dak...leading to a 2 year negotiation during exploding QB rates? I dont think its because its the most significant contract for each team and Jerry was just being careful with this one contract.

I agree that it seems like there were doubts about Dak getting a big contract. I speculate it was Stephen not wanting to pay him...but its total specualtion.

But...Dak won out with his leverage. This upset the Jones'. Now they are making Dak prove his worth. I speculate Moore was told to put Dak in "prove it" situations all game which is why he abandoned the run early in a game that was never more than a 2 possession game.

Only thing good about this is...if Dak doesnt pass the test this year when he comes back...Dallas has their answer on if Dak gets another contract. I suspect Stephen is ready to move on.

I would just draft a quarterback every year. Unless you have an elite prospect you should let your starter play out his contract. Dak is Mr. intangibles. There is not one thing he does on the football field that is elite. He is average across the board.

Unfortunately that's not a good argument, our dead cap is like dead center in the NFL. Not horrible

Or...play your backup more when you dont feel your starter is worthy of top QB money. At least then you know what your have at QB#1 and QB#2.

I'll never agree with the the backups getting no playing time even when up by 2+ possessions in the 4th quarter. It makes no sense when you could use those reps to see what you have at QB#2. I dont buy the coaches already know based on practice. Why was Brady picked in the 6th round then if coaches know all?

If you dont have a Rogers, Brady, Mahomes at QB#1...im playing QB#1 and QB#2 to see what I have. Then get rid of the lesser of two evils in the off season and draft a knew QB. Rinse and repeat until you have a good QB.

Speaking of the reps issues with QB's...everyone shouts that they need every real time rep possible because of the practice clause in the CBA. But...if you know your QB#1 is not a Brady, Mahomes or Rogers....why does it matter if they lose a reps/possessions to the QB#2? The QB#1 isnt the answer so those reps/possessions shouldnt matter.

The cap is tough to manage when all you have are a bunch of dudes looking to get paid and not win championships. It's clear to me, go to Dallas to get paid and pad your social media following.
